The idea that all these people do it, understanding the long-term consequences, is silly. Your argument is similar to someone arguing that there is no volition involved in drug abuse and addiction because no one would choose the misery of addiction.
I'm glad you mentioned suicide rates. If those high rates were to be explained by lack of acceptance and hatred, we would expect to find great disparities in different cultures. For example, we would expect much lower suicide rates in Norway, than in Brazil. Instead, we find consistently high rates across cultures, from those more accepting, to those that are unhospitable.
