I guess throughout this what has bothered me most is the lack of perspective and the whining, particularly from men. This is largely a consequence of historical ignorance. What we are going through right now is relatively minor compared to what countrymen endured in the past. People lived through a worse pandemic just coming out of the horrid First World War. People lived through a monstrous Great Depression. People lived through the threat of atomic/nuclear war for decades, which many/most believed was imminent. There wasn't this sort of whining and infantilizing projected, certainly not to this extent, by the men of those times.
300,000 deaths are terrible. I suspect all the mask-wearing in the world would not have prevented most of them from dying. Life is hard. Terrible things happen. Far more often in other places than here, I might add. We will get through this. Having a bunch of men sound the alarm on a daily basis and emote helps no one and just increases anxiety.
