After overpowering Atlanta, the left wing of Sherman’s Army (Aptly named the Army of Georgia) marched on the state capital at Milledgeville, prompting the departure of the governor and the state legislature.
On 22 November 1864 the Army of Georgia, Commanded by General Slocum’s troops captured the city and held a mock legislative session in the capitol building jokingly voting Georgia back into the Union.
