really don't want to know...but I will respond to the mental illness aspect of all this, which is frankly the central point of my position. To give you a sense of it, I'll share another 'vignette' with you...
Back when my son was in middle school, we joined an "Open League" for basketball and I agreed to coach one of the teams. Of course, my son was on my team, and I also 'drafted what turned out to be a very strong group of players, especially a couple of guards...but there was another player who was 'assigned' to our team...probably because we were so strong...and that boy (I'll call him "Billy") was a 'mainstreaming' Down's Syndrome young man.
Without dragging the story on, 'Billy' played in every game, but what sticks deep in my memory all these years later is the way the other kids treated him...I'll always remember one of our early games when the outcome was not at all settled...our starting guards...on their own initiative...called and set up a play specifically for Billy...it was a clear out for a mid-range shot that HE MADE!...the immediate joy on EVERYONE'S faces...especially Billy's just about floored me...I was SO PROUD of those kids for welcoming him, encouraging him, and celebrating with him. Hopefully, Billy remembers that special moment, but for sure, I'll never forget it.
Why bring this up here?...because I'm old enough to remember when it was common for Down's Syndrome kids to be called "Mongols" or "Retards"...they were summarily shunned and bullied for something they had no control over...I see the same treatment being meted out to transgender kids...it doesn't have to be...just as with Billy, if others would try to understand their situation and condition more, their lives won't have to be made ever more challenging. Maybe, with a little more effort, competitive circumstances can be worked out that are positive and reinforcing for all involved...we're certainly not there yet...but at least we should be able to go about the process in a more sympathetic way.
"Gender Dysphoria" is not a phenomenon that is well understood...what we do know is that genetics (e.g. "Epi-Genetics), hormones (on/off...amounts, etc) and environment can all come into play when evaluating each individual...we also know that un-knowing and un-sympathetic persons can and do shame, bully and abuse those kids...just like what used to happen with Down's Syndrome kids...and as a result, many are traumatized to the point of suicide...and for WHAT?...
More research is needed, both for the causes and treatments of transgender people, along with resolving when it is appropriate...or not...for a transgender girl to compete in women's sports. If it means a separate league for many or all, after study and deliberation, so be it...just so that the weakest among us are properly attended to.
