If your hypothesis were correct, we would expect wide variations between societies based on their level of "tolerance" (defined in the weird way that you and the activists define it). We would expect the Scandinavian countries to have far lower suicide rates than those in Eastern European or Latin American or Middle Eastern societies, but we don't. This suggests that rather then being an environmental cause (like lack of role models), it is primarily internal. Perhaps...perhaps...encouraging children to believe that they were "born into the wrong bodies," which suggests that there is something inherently broken or wrong with them, perhaps addressing the psychological disorder without indulging in fantasy is the way to go?
