That's why it caused Ukraine side furious in reaction to his talk.
What Macron meant is
1. The invasion is a mistake from Putin, a historic mistake. Because Putin isolated Russia from the world as a result of invasion.
2. But (the west) should not humiliate Russia because of this mistake. Calling Putin war criminal is one example of humiliation. Why? Because it won't help stop war. Macron's role is leading Europe to negotiate with Russia to stop the war, not threatening Putin. That's Biden's role (unfortunately).
A good analogy is in Les miserables, Jean Valjean stole silver from the bishop. It's a mistake from Valjean. But that bishop didn't humiliate Valjean for his action and even let Valjean keep the silverware.
I support the spirit of Macron's talk. If you want to have negotiation talk with Russia, stop humiliating Russia. But I disagreed with his point that Putin isolated Russia from the world. I think Macron is too eurocentric. Except the Europe, the rest of world didn't isolate Russia. I like what India foreign minister told western reporters a few days ago regarding to the Ukraine war. He said every time when Europe has a problem, you guys say it is the problem of the world. No, it's the problem of only Europe, not a problem of Asia, not a problem of India. Ukraine war is an European problem. It won't and shouldn't impact India's relation with Russia.
