Often, when going high-speed, you scrape and skid. Can produce bad road rash, but no broken bones, save for the occasional collarbone break. In contrast, the slow speed crashes can result in broken arms (trying to break your fall, as beginners do instead of balling up), femurs, or hips. Those last two breaks can be fatal for an old person.
