Now, wait a second: she's moving out to a subruban area? Didn't she get the memo that Covid-induced crime is rising there too and in the country?!?
Have you heard that one? Covid is to blame for crime spikes because there has been a rise in suburban and rural areas? The logic is that if crime is rising everywhere, any explanation that states that decisions made and things implemented in particular places, but not all, cannot explain the same phenomenon occurring in the places where these decisions are not being made. Well, all you need do is to look at how these same people explain the failure of gun control laws in select cities. What is their argument? Of course D.C. and Chicago and Baltimore still experience epidemic percentages of murders and shootings. After all, the surrounding areas lack similar gun control laws. In other words, there are spillover effects, and what occurs in one place is likely to occur in adjoining areas. In my neck of the woods, migration from Chicago north results in big city criminal activity that was once uncommon. To the west, migration from the Twin Cities has resulted in a string of homicides on that side of the state by perps from the Cities.
But the best way to challenge the "Covid causes crime" hypothesis is to simply ask how the mechanics of it works. Does Covid infection produce criminal behavior? Does being holed up in your house produce homicidal behavior? Stir craziness caused the crime spike? How does that work? Keep in mind, the primary population at issue here was among the least attentive to lockdown mandates and recommended pandemic behaviors.
