And it's just that, a myth.
Here's a fact: In the history of ND football, of all the head coaches who have also been a head coach at one or more other places, only three (3) had a higher winning % at their other combined stop(s) than they did(do) at Notre Dame.
1 - Frank Leahy (only because he was 20-2 at his only other HC stop)
2 - Joe Kuharich
3 - Brian Kelly
Only three! Of every other coach who has coached here (good ones and bad ones) they all won at a higher % at Notre Dame than they did at their other combined stops. How can that be, it's so tough to win here?? It's a myth, that's how.
Here is a comparison of our coaches since Faust, showing how they did here vs their other combined D1 head coach stops:
Faust at ND = 30-26-1 / .526 (+.059)
Faust other = 73-79-4 / .467
Holtz at ND = 100-30-2 / .757 (+.148)
Holtz other = 136-82-5 / .609
Davie at ND = 35-25 / .583 (+.208)
Davie other = 21-35 / .375
ty at ND = 21-15 / .583 (+.157)
ty other = 55-73-1 / .426
Weis at ND = 35-27 / .565 (+.351)
Weis other = 6-22 / .214
Kelly at ND = 57-28 / .670 (-.036)
Kelly other = 53-22 / .706
You put a good solid coach at Notre Dame who has ample experience and doesn't have the faulty Air It Out Baby / No Defense mentally, and the odds are he will do very well here.
But when you hire shit, like we did with Davie thru Weis, you get mediocre. So just don't hire shit when we can Kelly and we'll be ok...but he gots ta go!
