He doesn’t get enough respect from too many around here. For a portion of his ND career, the University had almost no commitment to the program. I remember reading a story back when ND was still in the Big East that said ND’s basketball budget was barely one-third that of Marquette. The U picked up with the commitment since then, and Brey has show pretty good results. He had back-to-back elite 8s with nowhere near the players that routinely run through the top programs. He won an ACC championship in a season in which Duke won the NC. I give him a mulligan this year due to injuries. To be “excellent” he’s going to have to produce in the next few years. He’s getting better recruits. He may turn out to be a guy who can overachieve with lesser talent, but can’t manage great talent. We’ll see.
