Functionally, an empty backfield running QB is about the same. But a true wildcat is designed, in part, for surprise and mismatch that doesn’t come with just having a running QB. I think there has been some looseness in the term “wildcat” over the years that has led to a kind of short-hand equating “running QB” with “wildcat.” I’m talking about a true “wildcat” play.
