Wimbush isn't a fit for the offense Kelly and Long want to operate. I think that is pretty clear at this point. In those struggling games with Ball State and Vanderbilt, I think ND was trying to get Wimbush to evolve into the QB to run the Kelly/Long O. Square peg, round hole. But I don't think that means it is impossible to call plays to maximize his strengths. As I wrote earlier, you call plays with limited reads and tell him not to be afraid to use his legs if those reads aren't there. That's his game. And he can throw a good deep ball, despite his accuracy issues. We saw it against MSU and USC last year, for example. ND just can't, at this stage of the season, continue to hope Wimbush becomes an optimal QB for the Kelly/Long O. If they do that -- if Wimbush tries to stay in the pocket and go through multiple reads, scramble with an eye toward finding a receiver instead of looking to break a big run -- ND will struggle.
