Somebody named ndgotrobbedin97 called Kelly a "solid" coach and to imagine if we had a "great" coach. Sigh.
Yes, I'll pat myself on the back for this one. I said on this board on Feb. 20, 2017 that "I think 2017 will be the start of a great era of ND football." Kelly changed basically everything about the program, but more importantly, himself. I pointed out it took Frank Beamer 7 years to hit his stride, as did Sandy Koufax. I said repeatedly Kelly 2.0 needed more than one year to determine if things had indeed changed.
Is Kelly a great coach? He's doing a lot of the things a great coach does. If he's not a great coach, at the very least he's moving towards that goal. Will he take a detour? Maybe. Maybe not. But right now it's hard to see him going back to failing ways.
I'm also enjoying going back to the archives in 2017 and seeing some of you claiming Kelly 2.0 is a mirage, that Wimbush should have been "put in a position to succeed," that I'm crazy (or worse), etc. I'm not claiming to be smarter than anyone else who said these things. I'm probably not. The only thing I had going for me was being willing to have an open mind about what Kelly was doing.
