an athlete you know you can't constantly do multi-joint exercises and in fact small ROM style movements like rack pulls and leg press have great benefit when trying to limit joint overload. Also confusing the muscles is important towards breaking thru plateaus. So an open chain movement like the leg press though it has a similar movement to a squat with the load placement being different and the feet moving it does help develop fibers used in a squat but without the load on the back.

Never seen sprinters using the leg press??
