I have been watching Notre Dame Football since 1966, so I clearly remember the good, the bad, and the ugly. Ara provided Notre Dame fans with some great memories. I also suffered through seasons where USC routinely kicked his ass every time he went out to the west coast after he beat them in 1966. I also remember that beating that Nebraska laid on him in the Orange Bowl. Oh, and by the way, how about those mediocre Purdue teams that beat him 3 years in a row and every other year after that. And then there is St. Lou. I will certainly acknowledge that he brought Notre Dame back from the dead. But I guess we all forgot about those two ass kickings he suffered on New Year's Day to Texas A&M and Colorado, in 1988 and 1995. Then there was the Tennessee debacle of 1991 at home where he blew a 31-7 lead, only to be unable to get his team ready to play the next week at Penn State where they were embarrassed 34-13. And let's compare this years Georgia game with the Miami game of 1989 where a #1 ranked Holtz team was completely dominated by Miami. I would think that it is fair to say that Kelly's team this year did a much better job in a hostile environment than Holtz did with probably much more talent in the Orange Bowl in 1989. If I want to really play devil's advocate, I can make the case that if the 1988 Miami game were played today, it probably would have went into overtime, (by the way Holtz never won an overtime game at ND) possibly denying him of any National Championships. This is not intended to trash Ara or Lou. But merely to point out how immature and insane it is to deny that Kelly is probably the best thing that has happened to Notre Dame Football since Holtz left. It 's not as though I think the guy is perfect. He does some shit that leaves me scratching my head. I probably curse and criticize him for many of the same reasons everyone else on this board does. But I also experienced these same feelings about Ara, Lou , and every other Notre Dame coach since 1966.
