The right side of an offensive line is traditionally where you put your best run blockers. Unfortunately, our right side of the line isn't exactly up to snuff.
Losing Robert Hainsey hurts, but at least Josh Lugg is a suitable replacement. Lugg will certainly be a starter in 2020, and can only get better.
There's a huge dropoff, going from Tommy Kraemer to Trevor Ruhland.
I love Ruhland. He's one tough SOB for being able to play, and he's an amazing representative of Notre Dame. I'm damned proud to call him a fellow ND alum.
Unfortunately, though, the fact that he's injury hobbled (the man is playing on knees that would make most people limp along), and probably playing closer to 70% of what he used to be able to do, means that the right side of the line has become a liability. He's a capable finesse blocker, but to expect him to overpower a defensive tackle one on one, is asking too much.
I'm equally concerned about Jeff Quinn not being able to develop someone more capable among the backups. There should have been at least one or two more linemen ready to step in after Lugg.
