Financial strain on athletic departments nationwide brought forth by the coronavirus means College Football Playoff expansion could happen sooner rather than later in an effort to recoup some of the losses expected during the 2020 season.
College administrators are overwhelmingly in favor of Playoff expansion according to a recent straw poll taken by Stadium. A large amount — 88 percent of FBS athletic directors — want more the four teams competing for a national championship at the end of the season once the current contract ends in 2025, the survey showed.
Of those ADs who favor an expanded playoff, 72 percent believe eight teams should qualify. There’s also growing support for including teams outside the Power 5, with 66 percent of the ADs vouching for the highest-ranked non-Power Five team should receive an automatic bid to an expanded playoff.
