The high school coach plays an enormous role in player recruitment. If he doesn't want a school speaking to his players, or favors certain programs, that has a bigger impact than parents. Keep in mind, HS coaches are trying to build their programs, and empires. Prime example is Bruce Rollinson at Mater Dei. He's a pipeline to SC, and was to Oregon.
My coach had connections to Cal State football programs, so it was Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Fresno State, who talked to me, and some of my teammates. He also worked at University of the Pacific, so he recommended UOP. He also urged me to take a trip to Occidental College as an alternative when my parents wanted me to focus on education, rather than football. OXY had a very good SCIAC football program. No athletic scholarships, but if they wanted you, and you were a decent student, they'd get you in.
Man, that was so long ago. Hard to believe that was part of my life..
