His skillset was limited, including the following issues:
1) Arm strength on medium and longer range routes was insufficient except in the cases of one on one, let the receiver fight for them. Opposing teams simply played the "defend against Tommy Rees" defense that they would squat in a short zone and take away the dink 'n dunk passing attack. He was actually very fortunate that Mike Mayer could fight those double coverages and win most of those battles. If Pyne had played in the Gator Bowl without Mayer, we may have started out a bit faster, but in the end, the offense would have been all too predictable.
2) Field vision was terrible. He missed all too many receivers breaking wide open over the middle. His height probably had some things to do with not seeing over the middle, but he still wouldn't see those receivers over the middle when doing a rollout. By all rights, Lorenzo Styles should have had a 50+ catch season.
3) Locked onto Mike Mayer and wouldn't look elsewhere. While he could get away with it for the most part, thanks to Mayer being all but unstoppable, there were at least two TD's left on the field for many a game, especially Stanford and USC, where he wouldn't look elsewhere.
4) Footspeed was subpar at best. There were many opportunities for him to scramble for a 5 yard gain, but due to slower speed and hesitation, he'd get stopped for no gain on all too many occasions. At least he could get a yard or two where needed, unlike his mentor, Tommy Rees (no mobility at all).
That being said, with all of his limitations, he played about as well as anyone could have hoped, where he put up some decent numbers. I do wish the best for him at Arizona State, and hope that he can be successful.
