Angeli is a good passer with very good touch and accuracy (much, much better touch and accuracy than Leonard), but there is nothing elite about his game and definitely not route awareness.
What have you ever seen that made you think he has "elite" route awareness? Hitting a wide open WR for a long pass on a blown coverage?
I'm not negative on Angeli, I think in terms of just pure passing skills he's probably the 2nd most talented on the team behind Carr. But I don't ever recall a play where Angeli threw with anticipation 'to a spot' where he displayed some high level route awareness knowing a guy was coming open after he threw the ball.
If you have a play or two in mind where he did this, please point them out and I'd be more than happy to go check them out.
Angeli has some real strengths and a few weaknesses. IMO the things he's weak at are things that can be improved with experience and good coaching. However they are things that with a suspect OL vs teams like A&M and Louisville may have gotten him and us killed. ..but our schedule is easing up now in terms of scary Defense/DLs.
I thought Angeli should have come in the second half vs NIU when Leonard was dinged up and really a liability out there and if Leonard struggles against the remaining schedule I'd be comfortable with giving Angeli an extended run with hopes our OL comes together in time for USC...but can we please not be using the word elite to describe Angeli until he actually shows something, anything, elite.
