Warren Sapp (& others like him) killed the triple option. Explosive linemen who shut down the option

before it got started pushed offenses away from the style of offense that last reigned under the Nebraska dynasty and its three national championships in the 1990s. I hate it when I see defenses playing wait-and-catch-the-runner against triple option teams (like we tried to do in the miserable Weis years) instead of blowing things up and shutting them down right away. It's what the great Ross Browner and Willie Fry would do. It's what the great Miam and FSU teams in the '90s could do. It's what Oklahoma national title teams could do in the '70s and '80s with studs like the Selmon brothers. But OU could still run the option on offense because they had the likes of JC Watts pitching to Billy Simms and Jamelle Holieway running TE reverses with Keith Jackson.

The point is, this is a game where our linemen need to blow up the Army line and hit the QB before he can do anything with the ball. If that happens, game over.

      • You mention Browner and Frye plus we had Niehaus, who did Weis have to blow up the option? I can't - THEISMANCARR - 2:30am 11/23/24
