A few days ago, I saw a post about favorite ND runs against USC and Penick and Rice runs were mentioned. I would like to add a few others. My first ND-SC game was in 1953 at the LA Coliseum in 1953. RB Joe Heap - who played in the shadow of Heisman winner Johnny Lattner - ran a kickoff back 94 yards for a TD (ND won 42-14). At 7 years old that was my first ND football game and I naturally figured all Notre Dame games went that way. The Terry Brennan- Joe Kuharic era taught me differently. The next ND-SC game at the LA Coliseum I went to was Ara's first in 1964 when ND was ranked #1 and SC - with the help of a bogus holding call which nullified a late ND TD - stole the game and a Natty! In 1965, SC came to South Bend ranked #1 with their Heisman winner Mike Garrett for the famous "Revenge Game." I watched on TV as ND pounded the ball on the ground with - Nick Eddy (117 yards); Larry Conjar (137 yards & 4TD's) and Bill Wolski (103 yards). I don't remember ND QB Bill Zlock throwing a pass but he was really good at handing the ball off to those three backs. Those were my favorite runs against SC because they went on for 3+ hours. I will be watching this Saturday in hopes that Love, Price and Leonard can create another memory for this old man, Go Irish!
