Subtle wokeness. A seemingly unmeaningful early massaging to see what the broader reaction is.

It can be denied.

It can be walked back.

It can easily be claimed as "not the intent".

It's not pushy and tying it to a recent beloved player makes it easy to rally behind rather than set off alarm bells. It makes it feel trendy. ND is typically stodgy with logos, colors etc. But this is just a test to see what the water feels like.

If there hadn't been calls for a logo change. If the Fighting Irish hadn't been rated the 4th most offensive college logo, if the Cleveland Indians hadn't chosen the subtle path of phasing out the Chief and the Redskins abruptly changed after years of fighting the woke battle I'd agree it was a new creative design. However, all those things happened in a very similar fashion.

Logos, statues, and icons are a sign of respect. Typically to people or groups that took a stand and put up a good fight during their time. Phasing them out because of modern-day feelings being hurt by people who played no part is very un-American.
