is really not that imposing for visiting teams. Unless it's a really huge game, the fans can be very ho-hum.
Had season tickets for 20 years, until Crossroads priced us out. I can only think of a few games where I thought the fans really played a role, including Miami 1988, Stanford 2012 (goal line stand especially) USC Bush Push, and maybe a couple of others.
My theory was that ND stadium was a prestige thing for rich fans. They'd sit the whole game, laps covered in a plaid blanket, and clap politely.
I do think they've tried to address that with the Jumbotron, music, DJ (yuck!!) and finally allowing resale of tickets. We were always threatened with excommunication (ie ticket revocation) if we resold our tickets. When we had our tour/sales pitch during construction the guide/rep was telling us we could actually make money on our season ticket package.
