Nothing wrong with playing to the whistle as long as the clock is running.

Run your offense. Try to score but you don't call a timeout with 5 seconds left and you're losing by 28 points. At that point let the clock run out and head to the locker room. That is, of course, unless you have a play in your playbook that will get you 28 points. Then, have at it. It was bush league. Same as if we had the ball at their one yard line and called a timeout just to try and score another TD. No one would ever do it.
