F.S.U. had earned it based on accomplishment, but the committee was clear that significant injuries and "who was the best right now" were considered.
Unfortunately for the Seminoles, they didn't have a blowout win after the injury to prove that they still belonged. I'm thinking of 2014, when Ohio State lost J.T. Barrett to injury, and had to go with Cardale Jones. The Buckeyes proceeded to win their Conference Championship game 59-0 behind Jones and made a resounding argument that they belonged. Florida State squeaked past Florida (5-7) and Louisville after the Travis injury.
The argument was basically Florida State or Alabama. It was clear they made the right call.
