Can't be done with this many teams in this many different conferences, who

make their own schedules and can intentionally schedule weak opponents if they want to.

The black and white method of the NFL works because of how small they are (in terms of # of teams) AND more importantly their schedules are 100% made for them, so in theory (while luck of the draw can change things) everyone should be playing schedules with similar levels of competition

You can never get that in CFB, which is why allowing 16 teams in, to help mitigate the margin of error with subjectivity, is the right move

  • espn wants a 16 team CFP moving forward. - Hensou - 9:29am 11/30/25 (24) [View All]
    • It should be 16, but there should only be 5 AQs (Top 5 Conf Champs) - Chrisb - 9:49am 11/30/25
      • as long as there is subjective decision-making, there are going to be issues [NT] - WestCoastIrishFan - 9:59am 11/30/25
        • There will always be complaints, people find ways to complain about who gets in NFL playoffs... - Chrisb - 10:20am 11/30/25
          • i’m not aware of people complaining about who gets in the NFL playoffs. Regardless, a 16 or 24 team - WestCoastIrishFan - 10:28am 11/30/25
            • I'm not for 24, and in a 16 team CFP, if SEC gets 5 or 7 in based on merit, ie where they're ranked - Chrisb - 10:35am 11/30/25
              • that’s the issue, who defines merit when leagues rarely play each other [NT] - WestCoastIrishFan - 10:39am 11/30/25
                • The CFP Committee! Who actually does a pretty darned good job with their rankings - Chrisb - 10:46am 11/30/25
                  • I want as little subjectively as possible. [NT] - WestCoastIrishFan - 11:08am 11/30/25

                              • i liked the way ohio used to do high school playoffs. teams got points for their wins - WestCoastIrishFan - 12:36pm 11/30/25
                                • I mean they could easily do something like that as major part (SOS ranking) in CFP - Chrisb - 1:51pm 11/30/25
                              • no different than the two best nfl teams being in the same conference [NT] - WestCoastIrishFan - 12:34pm 11/30/25
                                • It is different, in two ways - Chrisb - 12:48pm 11/30/25
    • Why not 64 teams? Then we can quibble about # 63 thru 65. [NT] - Shadow_of_the_Dome - 9:33am 11/30/25
      • Yeah, that makes total sense. 64 would be 47% of the field (more than even NFL), 16 would be 11% - Chrisb - 11:39am 11/30/25
    • there always will be bitching as long as it’s subjective. guy on X said it right, it’s now an - WestCoastIrishFan - 9:32am 11/30/25
      • Don't be ridiculous, the NFL has 14 of 32 (44%) in "playoffs" 16 of 136 is only 11%, huge difference [NT] - Chrisb - 9:54am 11/30/25
        • but the NFL doesn’t have subjectivity in its playoffs [NT] - WestCoastIrishFan - 9:58am 11/30/25
          • Yes, which would be a rationale to have MORE (not less) college teams in a playoff... - Chrisb - 10:12am 11/30/25
