It doesn't look like the conference affiliation is the problem

The article only summarizes the financial statements, but Rutgers' financial problems in its athletic department seem to be that the athletic programs just do not generate enough revenue to cover the operating expenses. Without the conference affiliation, the deficits get worse.

ND needs to stay independent for a whole host of reasons, but ND isn't Rutgers, so to me this "case study" doesn't apply.
