research is all about...maybe not the definitive last word...but for those of us not in the business, it should be helpful.
BTW, there's an interesting section of the article in which it's reported that the Obama administration...in 2014...ceased "GOF" research funding...but then that order was rescinded in 2017 by guess who...yup...Donald J. Trump's admin...interesting...no?
Any comments, Baron?...Have you any idea why the Trump admin restarted funding for GOF research?
Edit: For those wishing to go deeper into the GOF arena...especially wrt 'Ethics'...here is another article...https://www.news-medical.net/health/What-is-Gain-of-Function-Research.aspx

I did feel sorry for Fauci, having to stand next to Trump spouting BS.
But, the origins of the virus and more importantly how to prevent and/or deal with the next one are pretty important issues.
If we funded GOF research, which it appears we did, fine, there were probably rational and good intentioned reasons for doing so. But don't lie about it, this only fuels the conspiracy nuts. Don't dismiss the truth because of politics. Speak truth to evil and such...
But it is pathetic to believe that the rage directed at Fauci (entirely from the right) is not essentially political.
Official advice and positions evolve as the data comes in. Science evolves. Shocking.
And neither was the lab leak origin, "scientists" are lying, I'd like to know why. And it has nothing to do with Trump, who I loathe, nor politics. The truth is important. It is scientifically important above all.
I think there was too much of an effort to dismiss the lab-leak theory at first, because it had become so politicized.
But today it seems to me that there are experts who make good arguments for - and honestly believe - both the animal and lab origin theories. I don’t pretend to know who is right…but we need to figure it out to prevent the next plague.
And the fucking Chinese are not helping at all.
Politicized science is the antithesis of science.
for risky bio research...(again, check out the links I've provided for more details on GOFR)...but Dr. Fauci has emphatically denied the assertion and Rand Paul has effectively muzzled him in the Senate hearings from giving his explanation...it is presumptuous to say that he (Dr. Fauci) lied.
As I'm coming to understand this high-risk bio research arena, there are many facets to it, and not all of them can be classified as GOFR...let's continue to ask for clarity, but hold off on any accusations of lying.
There is no history of Dr. Fauci ever politicizing anything related to infectious diseases...until Tump came along with his "Hoaxes" and bizarre alternatives to recommendations by the CDC and Dr. Fauci...all for the purpose of downplaying the pandemic and keeping his chances of re-election alive.
Pardon me if I lean in favor of Dr. Fauci.
Too lazy to look it up, but I'm guessing Fauci has been on the cover of Newsweek.
But as the Afgh debacle showed, you are too partisan blind to believe basic incontrovertible facts. Not worth discussing.
"Uncover", nor "Prove"...just "Suggest"...maybe some editor made the right decision not calling him a "Liar".
BTW...Notice the publication's use of single and double quotations...how were you able to fix your gaze on that?...must have been a struggle ;-).
That's it for me on this topic....Cheers!
Really glad your ilk is working on climate change and such. It's not like it could be made worse, right?!?!?!
...at this point in time.
Better dust off that family perjury expert...

statements in the article...furthermore, I've seen that clip of Rand Paul and Dr. Fauci a few times...it's a frustration to Dr. Fauci...and more importantly to the American public, that Sen. Paul refuses to allow Dr. Fauci to explain "Why" he made the statements that a) he emphatically denied GOFR funding, and b) Why something he was referencing in that regard was "Molecularly Impossible!".
Something tells me that had he been able to give his full response, we wouldn't be talking about this right now...but then, Rand Paul probably knew that and wanted to be able to carry on his political agenda...if he really wanted to hear the answer and learn from the country's top Infectious Disease authority, he'd button his lip and listen.
Once again...who are you going to trust...a man who has impeccable credentials in the field and has been trusted by Presidents of both parties for decades...or a Senator who tells the American public to not listen to their CDC as COVID-19 surges everywhere?...a fair question for you.
...said but I have always criticized Trump for his handling of Covid among other things,
That said, I was not happy when a great many were trying to gloss over the possibility of a leak from the Wuhan Lab. I have always wanted it explored until it is proven to not be the case.
Fauci tried to dismiss it...and it causes me to question his motivation. Also, very early on, the Chinese were saying there was no human to human transmission. Fauci initially accepted their view. Why on earth would anyone trust the Chinese government to do anything but try to cover up and deflect away from any possible culpability? I am concerned that Fauci readily accepted this because of his involvement with the Wuhan Lab when it should have been met with extreme skepticism.
