Naturally, they take something akin to the men's group at my church and transform it into a navel-gazing therapy session. What a shame.
I have a friend and I had a student teacher this Fall who were big into this kind of talk and thinking. They're good people, they just buy into this belief system and are governed by varying levels of guilt they impose on themselves. They don't seem to be virtue signaling. They really do believe we live in a patriarchy that oppresses women and that they contribute to it. It's a miserable way to live, obviously. I'll go out on a limb and guess that the men in this story won't be any more contented next year at this time, nor five years from now.
The biggest trick the patriarchal hegemonist ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

And patriarchy’s roots are prehistoric by a whole lot.., and probably predate the existence of our species.
It's also part of history that physical strength and aggressiveness (presumably male traits) were necessary to survive.
In our increasingly mechanized society, physical strength has far less importance. And aggressiveness may well be a bug, not a feature. Aggressive tendencies probably contribute more bad (domestic violence, sex crimes, even war) than good. It could be that the direction of the world is one in which presumably inherent female traits are more important.
As our highest and best use (building things, fighting, driving) become obsolete in view of technology, I'm not sure a patriarchal society makes any sense.
We are not programmed to live in a modern society. The issue is how to overcome our programming so we can adjust to our new circumstances?
Still not sure what the story is about.
