His advisors apparently don't know. The Prime Minister of Denmark said they can't sell what they don't own. They did own it when Truman discussed the possibilty. The WH is really on the ball.

That’s as bad as Maxine Waters asking the NASA head when the astronauts would return to earth after
they showed the first color pictures from Mars. It was hilarious watching that guy explain to the brilliant Ms Waters that the Mars Rover took those pictures and there were no astronauts on Mars.
Or when she convened America’s top bankers as Chair of the Banking committee, think about that for a second, earlier this year asking when are they going to make student loans more affordable. And then having to be told that it became a government program in 2003 and they didn’t do student loans anymore.
These are the leaders of the democrat party. Waters may be the dumbest person ever to serve in Congress and that’s saying a lot.
This is the first time I am intrigued by a Trump proposal.

It's obvious from Trump's statements that he is ignorant of Greenland's situation.
The Danish Prime minister said, "Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland." I knew that, but Trump doesn't. He's going off half-cocked.
Put some troops on Greenland against Denmark's will, and then see what they say.
And if mapsoftheworld.com says Greenland is a part of Denmark, then maybe the Danish Prime Minister needs to go back to school.

This kind of reminds me of one of my China colleagues telling me that Taiwan is a part of China. I'm thinking, "Try putting some Chinese infantry ashore, and then we shall see if Taiwan is part of China." Opposite case, obviously. But, it points out that a country is not always a country is not always a country. Politicians are worse than lawyers.

It is not going to happen but acquiring Greenland would not be impossible
Greenland could obtain full independence from Denmark via referendum. Then they could pursue becoming a US territory.
Considering Greenland gets 2/3 of its budget via Danish subsidies, none of this seems prudent or likely.
A better approach would be to do what China is currently doing- purchase mineral rights and set up mining operations. Unfortunately mining there will not be easy until we can accelerate global warming by raising more flatulent cows.
We could double or triple their subsidies.

I honestly have no idea what the current status is. I know that Denmark extends their military protection to Greenland. I guess that means Greenland gets NATO protection for no cost.
It is part of the Danish kingdom , as Scotland is part of the United Kingdom
Either can leave via referendum. An independent Greenland could make any kind of alliance they wanted to. The thought they would prefer to align with the United States than Denmark seems extremely far fetched.
They have more autonomy than Scotland.
