The quickest way to increase fuel economy is to make cars lighter. Lighter cars tend to get demolished more easily in accidents.

I would not have guessed there was a connection.
....this is the real issue here. I don’t know much about emission regs in Cali other than that they always seem to be the most strict and sometimes are claimed by engineers to be unattainable. Maybe so, maybe not.
But the idea of a state choosing which federal laws to follow and which to ignore is very detrimental to our country. You can imagine how this could play out elsewhere on various issues.
Right now, the real battle is not just the particular issue. The Left hates Trump, and far left states are pushing the legal limits of “resisting” to their breaking point. I promise that they won’t like it if say Indiana decides not to recognize a liberal federal law.

There is a certain feel-good, easy-win aspect to California’s efforts to force the US auto industry to adopt stringent CAFE standards in cars nation-wide. The costs are high (yet mostly unattributable to the politicians in Sacramento) yet the results are minuscule in the grand scheme of things.
If we want to meaningfully reduce GHG emissions, these end-runs by politicians are mostly useless. The only way to succeed is to institute carbon taxes and then let the market sort things out. But, of course even the loons in Sacramento are afraid to do that.
How do we balance that against the costs of additional pollutants in the air?
Do we think Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, the Bushes, Clinton and Obama all got that balance wrong by allowing California to have the waiver?
I just find it odd that we trust these big changes to someone that admittedly is not the least bit intellectually curious. Of course, he could be right in this case.

Everybody wants trucks, SUV’s and crossovers.
