There was no weeping the day he left office anywhere in the land. The economy was stressed and after the 60's culture wars so was the country. As completely paranoid jerk, Nixon was the perfect vessel for country's frustrations. It was a sense of universal relief when he boarded the plane for California.
I'm not sure this will be the case if Trump is somehow forced out of office. I suspect that the Republicans would lose a serious chunk of their fanatical base for quite a while... and they know it! That's why it's hard to imagine the Senate voting him out.

It was a partisan issue, like impeachments always are. But half the GOP stood with him to the end.
