Is there a worse run professional sports league than MLB?

I'll confess that I have not followed the details of the back and forth between the owners and the players, but the optics of billionaires and millionaires arguing over how to divide up a smaller multi-billion dollar pie with so many people out of work and so many more looking for any signs of a return to normalcy is just so bad. A pox on both houses.

Having said that, I hope the season isn't cancelled. Not because I care about baseball, but because I want to see their product go up against NBA and NHL playoffs, the NFL and NCAA football for TV ratings. I hope fans tune out in droves.

The guy hates the sport he's the head of.

Kind of reminds me of when Rocket Ismail played for Notre Dame

Agreed. Powerful players union that simply never wants to give an inch.

They're in real jeopardy of not having a season at this point.

Horrible “long game” perspective by players.

Besides golf, baseball is the safest “social distancing” sport.

It's said MLB union is the most powerful union ever. Near 4 bil $ divided by only 1200 union members

If they give up on this season, they are in trouble.

For the NBA and NHL, once they finish up their playoffs for this season, they won't be back to business as usual the following year. It will likely take a couple of seasons to get back to their regular FALL-to-SPRING seasons. So it's likely the Summer of 2021 will have NBA and NHL playoffs again, not to mention Summer Olympics and Euro 2021 (both postponed from this summer) too. Regular season baseball in July 2021 will struggle to get interest up against playoffs in other sports. Without having the summer all to itself, baseball will find it tough to get people to notice, especially if they've sat out a whole year.

It's painfully obvious they need to settle up and get back to playing. I just don't get the scorched earth approach.

There is absolutely no visibility with regard to the numbers.

Players say they want pro-rata pay, which seems fair.

Owners say they can't afford that. The loss of ticket sales, concessions, and probable hit to TV revenue is cited. Owners won't open the books, so nobody knows if (or how much) they are lying.

Personally, I can't believe they (the owners) would be so obstinate if they could at least break even. My guess is that a season in the suggested format would cause losses over and above the losses that they are going to take by just cancelling (debt service, yada yada).

put games on at home for background noise because you don't have to follow as closely as other sports, same with golf, you just lookup and rewind after you hear the crowd

The money's always been coming in, so I don't think they really care, but the NFL is pretty bad
