60's...btw, he was an engineer at Lawrence Livermore Lab, so he saw more than most the damage and after-effects that would befall the Bay Area...it ended up being the repository of the entire family's wine collections over the years...we all had alternate routes pre-planned to get there...just in case of an attack...or bad harvest in Napa/Sonoma ;-).

Obviously, it was a family treasure and the source of much merriment...sad when that marvelous woman (Grandma) passed away at 96 and the house/shelter was sold.

I had extended family who had bomb shelters. I don't know how much good they truly would have done, but people were genuinely scared of that back then. These were in Kansas, too....not a likely Soviet target.
(Atlas/Titan) near Topeka (see link)...definitely cause for concern to those living nearby at that time.
