That is basketball factory joke stuff. He has been in school all semester but really there to play basketball. Doubt he has done much if any course work otherwise why just drop out near the end of the semester?? He would have stayed enrolled one more week if we made the final four then dropped out with just 3-4 weeks to go? If we are going to do it right and not do joke school bs lets do it right. I call the school out too - they had to know. Instead they send a message congratulating him on declaring for the draft and pretending he was in school the last 2.5 months.
You don't know the first thing about his pre-draft plans and schedules. You have no idea what conversations he has had with academic advisors about earning his degree. You have absolutely no insight into his future plans. Yet that doesn't stop you from coming on here and spewing this bullshit about the message that it sends.
Preening, pretentious internet board moralizers could be the most contemptible people on this planet.
If you think what he did was great, terrific, tell me why in an intelligent cohesive argument. Otherwise, spew forth with profanities and ad hominem (look it up) attacks. Facts are facts and these are the facts in this case. He played all season this semester on the basketball team. He quit school the day after basketball season ended. I'm pretty reasonably sure that his academic advisor did not advise to stay in school until the season ended and then quit and get no academic credit for the semester. I'm also pretty reasonably sure that his action was premeditated and that he would not have quit last week if we had won and gone to the final four. He would have perpetuated the charade another nine days then dropped out. He seems like a great kid and is obviously a great player - he very well may have taken us to our first final four since 1978 and maybe even the national championship - not a stretch to think he could have been MVP of the final four. But doesn't it give you the slightest pause and don't you feel those accomplishments would be somewhat tainted if he accomplished nothing in the classroom - no final, no grade, no academic credit- during that same stretch of time. Perhaps not, but it does for me. When you take the student out of the student-athlete there is not much left. You may remember Cordele Jones of OSU who sent out an infamous tweet (answer to question a couple posts below) "Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL classes are pointless." He was ridiculed (appropriately)as was OSU by many on this board for a culture that was detrimental to college athletics. If your name is in the record books for your athletic accomplishments but you have a 0.0 GPA classes were pointless for you too, especially when you drop out at the end of the season. ND has been for years one of the only NCAA division 1 programs that refuses to lower it standards - I would prefer it not take the first step toward Calipari land. But don't let my opinion get your blood pressure up. To me, it is the profane, wannabe board moderators who explode at opinions they disagree with like a two year old are the contemptible (big word for you) ones. I'm sure you are not quite so tough in person, so I'm glad you have the Internet to vent. Hope you liked Batman vs Robin.
"Could have" or "could've" works. As long as we are pontificating, maybe someone else needs to go back and get an education.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
And once again commenting on something you know absolutely nothing about.

When you stop being a first-class douchebag who bitches about EVERYTHING and castigates a kid about decisions he makes when you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about his circumstances and reasons for making those decisions then you will stop seeing responses from me. Until then....

It's long and distinguished
Don't worry - you can resume your cyberstalking tomorrow. I'll still be here. But you really could cut back on the profanity. But maybe that's just you.
God you suck at this.

I'm a college baseball coach. We have games on the weekend and have Mondays off. Shocked because it is just one more thing you are clueless about. You are running up quite a tally tonight.

At least you are consistent so you have that going for you.
And I'm equally sure your posts will be filled with STFU's, D-bags, various profanities and insults with nary an original thought or coherent counter argument. If that's your limits, so be it. You are amusingly reliable to show up full of cyber rage. Hope you are more composed on the field "coach".
But then this is cyberworld....he could be anything he wants to be
He acts like a two year old
Are you a supporter of people that bash kids when they know nothing about their situation, what they have done, or what they have planned to do? I'm not.
What a new concept, bashing kids from other schools, making fun of other schools academic standards, ranting about how tough it is for ND to recruit great athletes with such tough academic standards
And then we get this joker quitting school as soon as the last game is played
You keep defending him, we get the complete picture on who you are.
I have zero respect for this kid, nada, zip. He is an embarassment to Notre Dame. So are you.
But I'm not going to bash him without knowing anything about his situation. Maybe he deserves it, maybe he doesn't. but feel free to make whatever assumptions you want. Now you and salbam can go back to sucking each others dicks.
Talk about sucking dicks
I'm guessing your're 15?

Your beef essentially is with the school and not DJ.
"Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL. We ain't come here to play SCHOOL. Classes are POINTLESS." It was a statement widely mocked on the football board as reflecting an inferior culture of another prominent college athletic program. Having a kid stay in school til his sports season is done then quit school and get zero course credit for the semester seems to reflect the sentiment expressed by our widely ridiculed competitor. The only record that DJ was enrolled in the school last semester is his athletic record. And that's a joke and puts a taint on on otherwise exciting season.
Did you see where he has met with the academic advisor to map out a plan for him to take the courses he needs to finish his degree. Get off your high horse and wish the kid good luck.
if you want to eventually get your degree, then don't throw away the current semester you are about to complete? I really don't know much about what is going on, but if on one hand you are eventually interested in getting your degree, it seems counter to that notion that classes you are a few weeks away from getting credit for, you toss away. One way or another something doesn't add up.
That is UK style bs where almost all starters drop out of school after season. Instead of a high horse how bout trying not to lower the bar, or else let's stop pretending we are much better than anyone else. Hard to defend our tough academic standards chasing recruits away when those standards are melting away in front of our eyes

A little NYese slipping in. I edited my papers a lot more closely than my posts - thankfully no grades
The only thing Demetrius Jackson is conveying is the fact that at the present moment, it would not be prudent to continue his studies at Notre Dame. At no time did he give an indication that he will not complete his studies at Notre Dame. The fact that he has met with an advisor to structure a plan for him to finish what he started at a later time indicates to me that he has every intent on graduating. The window for any athlete to earn a living playing a sport is a narrow one to say the least. The window for him to finish his studies is infintesimal by comparison.
Finally, we all need to remember the backstory behind DJ. He grew up in adverse situations and eventually needed to be adopted by a foster family. That very fact alone is most likely a profound driving force behind his decision to earn a substantial amount of money with hopes of eventually paying back those who have helped him along his path. I cannot fault him one bit for wanting that for himselves and his loved ones.
No reason he can't finish the semester and go pro early. Season starts In NBA next season. Have no problem with him or any athlete going pro early. Often a bad choice but certainly a legitimate one. My problem is that this was clearly premeditated to enroll this semester and quit after the tournament. Does anyone really think he would have dropped out Monday if ND won and was going to the final four? Of course not. He would have pretended to be in school one more week and dropped out the after finals. My problem is with DJ or any athlete being a pretend student in order to play a sport. This happens all the time elsewhere. Did not used to happen here. I think ND should be better than that. Regarding his adverse circumstances, all the reason to finish the semester. See no advantage to quitting with a month to go - only downside for him. But I would guess he has done almost no course work this semester and has been planning this for months.
Exactly what control does ND have over the choices of students as to when they withdraw whether they are athletes or not? I knew kids that were not athletes that withdrew before the end of a semester. What should ND be doing to be "better than that"? Should they put Jackson in shackles and drag him to classes?
He consulted with Brey and others. He didn't make this decision in a vacuum. Jackson will make more in his first year than salbam will make in his lifetime.
I expect Vastauria to go any minute. The horror! The horror! We're melting......
He's not happy unless he's bitching about something even if he doesn't have a clue what he's ranting about.

You are nothing but a pompous ass.

You need to get a clue and quit bitching about EVERYTHING. What is the last positive thing you posted recently? I can't wait for your response to this.
that works with him, he is a decent student and has taken numerous summer classes. I don't think he is that far away from degree. I would rather see him finish too, but to kind of accuse him of being unethical is assuming too much. Please don't compare him to the numerous one and dones.
has turned into another path to professional sports. But, give credit to the institution of this indeed is true, that he represents a small, small minority of athletes that bolt.
I doubt he did virtually any class work. This was no better than any basketball factory does. Sorry but you don't congratulate the kid for using you the last 10 weeks. School should tell all athletes at the beginning of the season if you drop out mid semester to go pro we are done with you. Cut ties totally. Why can't football players play all season to show the scouts and drop out of school before finals if we are not in a big bowl game? Makes the system a complete joke. The school and our athletes are supposed to be better than that.

You have no idea if his second semester was a farce. That's total speculation. He may not have known he was leaving until after the team went as far as they did in the tourney. If they're eliminated early, maybe he makes a different decision. These guys change their minds all the time. Will Fuller comes to mind.
You need talented guys for those "exciting" seasons, and that's always going to cause a conflict with players who want to go pro. The guy wasn't in trouble while at ND. He didn't flunked out. He didn't get a DUI or have problems with the law. Much ado about nothing. I assume you feel the same about football players who leave after their junior year?
Think it is bad for college sports and the kids in general but I totally understand the economics of it from the players standpoint, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. My problem is not completing the academic semester - only the athletic season. I would have a problem if Will Fuller declared for the draft after the Stanford game and quit school after playing all season. Wouldn't you?
You're okay if a football player finishes the season, and fall semester, but doesn't return for spring semester to finish the year? I get the timing thing looks strange in Jackson's situation, with him only having a month left. I'm just not sure it's all that different. He must want to focus on the draft, and he has a shorter window to do so when compared to the football players. It wouldn't have been my decision, but I'm not the one facing that opportunity, so it's difficult to say. And it sounds like his stock went up quite a bit after the tourney.
If he's taking care of business while in school and not getting into trouble, I just can't get all that worked up about it. I'd probably jump at the money too.
Someone will sue NCAA/NFL re freshman being able to declare for the draft. And they will win. And you will have kids enroll in college, quit after the season and never take a final exam. Forget about one and done, that will be the beginning of the none and done. And you will have a Heisman winner who never received a single college credit. What makes college sports (especially basketball) far superior to pro sports in my opinion is that these kids are student athletes, they go to class, write papers, live in dorms, take tests etc. And what makes ND superior to most other institutions is that they take these things seriously and don't try to game the system the way other schools ( hello UNC, Louisville, FSU just to name few in our conference) do. This incident is so against what we have done for decades I do not want to see it begin a slippery slope towards lowered standards.
