Van Gorder was among the top 5 highest paid DCs.
It isn't as if ND won't pay the right guy.

According to his ND's tax return, BVG made about 1.1MIllion in 2014 (see: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2016/09/25/notre-dame-fires-brian-vangorder-defensive-coordinator/91081744/ )
According to the article at the link below, his 2014 salary that would place him in the Top 10 in 2015 of all assistants, and top 5 of DCs. (Maybe higher if Under Armour et. al. pay him directly too.)
He is not listed in this chart at all--probably because ND doesn't make it easy to get the info.

The top article is suggesting ND should go out and get the biggest fish in the pond and pay a premium for a coordinator - something they aren't historically known for doing.
The article you post suggests that ND should go after someone who isn't a "brand name," and could possibly provide more value considering the costs.
Regardless, it will be very intriguing to see whose hands this defense ends up in.

exactly what should be happening with Tillery. His talents are being wasted getting double teamed on the inside every play. That guy would be a frickin nightmare for offenses from the WDE position.
None of them consistently play with any passion. And that is at the heart of why this defense is so bad.

The DL is the most experience group of the entire defense. Their play is lethargic.
I can count the number of impact plays on one hand all three have them made all season.
I predict two of the three (Jones, Tillery, Rochelle) won't be starting vs Syracuse.
Rochell, Tillery, Cage, and Jones have all made notable plays. The DL in this style of defense isn't going to be showcased. They're constantly doubled and the LBs are expected to read and react. It's a horrible scheme. Plus...they're not told to play like SEC DLs. Tillery and Rochell are both from SEC country and in defenses like LSUs and Bama's those 2 would look like animals and this forum would be screaming "why can't we get guys like that". Plus...they're in wayyyy too long. They should be rotated in much more often and getting speed guys in.
They're not the issue...
Besides...why should they be excited? Your def coord is putting you in a position to fail.
Yes, the defense sucks and yes the principle problem with this defense is the scheme and the coaching.
But of all the groups within the defense, considering their overall talent and experience, this is the most disappointing group on the field. Only Cole Luke has been more disappointing and underachieving that the combo of Jones, Tillery and Rochelle.
Luke has been ND's best CB the last few years, and he's made a lot of plays this year. He's struggled at times too, but who hasn't on this D.
Tillery is a true sophomore, being asked to clog up the middle. He's played well all year, especially given his responsibilities.
Jones missed most of the last year and a half of football with lower body injuries. Injuries you can't....you know....work your lower body out with.
Add to that the fact they have played over half a season worth of snaps through 4 games.
To compare any of these guys with Redfield or say they have no heart is, quite frankly, bullshit.
How they proceed with hiring a DC will be very telling of BK's job security beyond this season. If they pursue and hire big name DC, then it stands to reason that BK likely gets another year to get the program on track.
If they keep Hudson in the interim role through the season, it seems likely that BK will be gone.
I would think that it would be tough to lure a big name DC without promise that BK's job (and thus the DC job) is secure. Nobody is going to want to hitch their wagon to a dead man walking.
