The only way I can even imagine the remote possibility that Kelly wouldn't be brought back next year would be a complete disaster of season - something like 3-9 or 2-10. A loss today and 3-9 could be possible.
A loss today and bowl eligibility becomes not just a question but possibly unlikely.
A loss today and that recruiting class could start to crack a little.
A win will not cure all that ails the Irish but it gets things back on track at least momentarily and stops the bleeding. It does what Weis and co couldn't do in 2007 when the losses kept mounting. A win and the staff can go back to those recruits and say "see, we're just young and learning. We'll be right back next year with your help".
Can't believe a noon kick-off against Syracuse at Met Life Stadium has taken on as much importance as it has but this game really is huge. As sad as that sounds.

I personally suspect that it will be VERY hard for Kelly to keep his job at the end of the year.
He crossed a line with alumni - small and important alike - when he threw the players under the bus (yet again) after the Duke loss. Particularly egregious were his humiliating comments against Malik Zaire.
(Did you hear Doug Flutie make the comment that it was fortunate that ND had a trained, true QB running that trick play rather than a RB? He pointed out that since the play had no chance from the very start and Zaire had no time, a RB would have thrown the ball up and had it intercepted. A former pro QB felt that any kind of a throw would have been too risky - even an out of bounds attempt. Yet later, Kelly said he wouldn't see the field again this year after not throwing it out of bounds).
The players are students, and as such, are members of the "Family". Kelly is NOT a member of the Family. Kelly attacked the Family. I am pretty sure Kelly is gone.
I just hope we can retain Heistad and Denson.

I can NEVER cheer for ND to lose, but......
It's been 7 years. Kelly had most definitely upgraded the program, but I think we can comfortably say he likely won't get us to where we want to be.
If we shit the bed the rest of the year, would they dump him? I tend to doubt it.
No way I'm going against my beloved Notre Dame.....GO IRISH!!
south. That would take buy out issues out of the equation.
Is because we always wait too long to fire our coach. Davie had 2 years longer than what was needed to know he wasn't the guy. Ty had a year longer than was needed to know he wasn't the guy. And now we'll give Kelly another unnecessary year to crap away before we pull the trigger.
and we are replacing the defensive coordinator. I still believe in this group. Now let's win this game and keep improving the defense (and special teams).
it's false. The Defense is not our only problem. It is our biggest problem, but to pretend that the offense isn't part of the problem too is very naive.
I am not going to write him off for a poor start to a year. We underperformed on defense, which has cost us games. I am hopeful we can get a great defensive coordinator. Kelly has shown good adaptability and I think this change is what is necessary. I don't believe Kelly or the players have given up that we can be a championship caliber team. This year is not what we hoped, but the program can still go in the right direction.
P.S.
Both of his good years ended with embarrassing blowout losses.
He gots to go!

sorry it doesn't mesh well in your fantasy land.
I remember more than a few who hung onto Chuck, even after he was canned.
