I know I'm gonna get hammered on this but here goes...At this point, I have no clue how long Kelly will be here. Going into this year, I wasn't crazy about Van Gorder but was hopeful Kelly was our guy for the long haul but unfortunately I don't think that is the case but it begs the question...can we lure a big name Coach any longer or do we have to be creative? Here is the point where I get hammered... What about we go back to the triple option days of Tony Rice and bring in the Navy Coach Ken Niumatalolo?! Hammer away.
Offer it to someone who has been in all phases of university administration, including the current President of a large university, as well as a football coach with the highest level of success possible, outside of the NFL....

And it's just that, a myth.
Here's a fact: In the history of ND football, of all the head coaches who have also been a head coach at one or more other places, only three (3) had a higher winning % at their other combined stop(s) than they did(do) at Notre Dame.
1 - Frank Leahy (only because he was 20-2 at his only other HC stop)
2 - Joe Kuharich
3 - Brian Kelly
Only three! Of every other coach who has coached here (good ones and bad ones) they all won at a higher % at Notre Dame than they did at their other combined stops. How can that be, it's so tough to win here?? It's a myth, that's how.
Here is a comparison of our coaches since Faust, showing how they did here vs their other combined D1 head coach stops:
Faust at ND = 30-26-1 / .526 (+.059)
Faust other = 73-79-4 / .467
Holtz at ND = 100-30-2 / .757 (+.148)
Holtz other = 136-82-5 / .609
Davie at ND = 35-25 / .583 (+.208)
Davie other = 21-35 / .375
ty at ND = 21-15 / .583 (+.157)
ty other = 55-73-1 / .426
Weis at ND = 35-27 / .565 (+.351)
Weis other = 6-22 / .214
Kelly at ND = 57-28 / .670 (-.036)
Kelly other = 53-22 / .706
You put a good solid coach at Notre Dame who has ample experience and doesn't have the faulty Air It Out Baby / No Defense mentally, and the odds are he will do very well here.
But when you hire shit, like we did with Davie thru Weis, you get mediocre. So just don't hire shit when we can Kelly and we'll be ok...but he gots ta go!
occasionally. Kizer has run it, but does not do it well. First of all it is meant to finesse teams that are more physically powerful but it takes a toll on players , especially the QB who is hit on every play. I like being able to throw the ball well but running the ball to create opportunity with play action passes is the way to go, with some spread with big play potential.

Has won championships in NCAA, CFL, and AFC.
Plus, he could be the first Jewish head football coach at ND.

I'm not sure what to think about his being the HC at ND. It's true he did a nice job in the CFL as a HC, but other than that, his time with the Bears wasn't exactly sparkling.
over the players.
wasn't all that long ago everyone bitched that we had to go away from the option to lure difference makers. I think a spread offense or pro offense is fine but no triple option. Just my opinion and I'm not ripping on you.
I am wary of Herman, Harsin, and even Shaw's lack of overall experience.

Their JC contacts are useless at ND.
Which BK has had every year.
Like 5-8 JC players is the formula for success... cmonnnnnah
Maybe you put stock in that bullshit. I don't.
ND recruits always are marked up because an additional star or two gives ND fans who buy the recruiting services a chubby. ND fans are, and always have been, the most loyal consumers of the white noise the services sell.
These days, ND is recruiting guys who think they can't make it at Alabama or Ohio State. Guys who are key players for us, like Rochelle and Jarron Jones, had beaucoup stars, but would never even see the field at Alabama.
ND is a punch line, not a destination, for top 50 types since the frozen five fiasco. We even have to get in line behind Stanford for good players who are susceptible to the "40 year decision" pitch.
Top ten recruiting classes...don't make me laugh.

Washington isn't a destination job. ND might not be able to pry him away, but I really don't think that is written in stone.

That a guy is comfortable at a place and stays there a long time doesn't make it a "destination job." George O'Leary has been at UCF for over a decade, that doesn't make UCF a "destination job." Iowa isn't a destination job, no matter how long Ferentz stays put. Frank Beamer can stay at Virginia Tech forever, it won't make that a destination job.

(I use "command" loosely) I wanted Petersen but most of the in-the-know football experts here said he was "small timey - couldn't compete in the big boys club" and that Kelly was the savior. The only other coaches on the wish list were Stoops and Stoops.
I look to Mac and others who had Kelly on their wish list. Though I don't think Kelly was a bad choice, my first choice was Petersen and still is.
I don't know his career aspirations but he may be one of the more likely candidates given his past connection to ND.
After 8 years of getting beat up in the SEC, he may be ready for a change.

Peterson is unlikely to leave the West Coast.
imo, Shaw is overrated and won't come to ND anyway.
Patterson probably isn't a good fit at ND.
Herman is going to Texas/LSU/USC, probably in that order.
It would be a major surprise if any of those guys end up at ND in the next couple of years.
I think the next head coach at ND will come from the next generation of guys (Doeren/Durkin/Holgorsen/Harsin/Campbell, etc) who really have no place to go to really improve their situation if they are so inclined. I don't know what these guys' career aspirations are nor do I know if they are good enough just that they are in the younger group of coaches from which ND should look at when the time comes. Durkin may be a bit green (especially if a move is made this year which is unlikely) but is a guy no one is looking at who has excellent credentials in his first head coaching much like Herman and has been at ND.
Who do you think would be a good choice?
Physical, smash mouth football. Run 1st football. Football that is won at the line of scrimmage.

His contacts in Texas and California are with JCs; he is unknown in other ND recruiting areas.
I would be very surprised if ND would hire him, even though I am sure he knows his football.

I'll get hammered. Find out why big names won't come and then fix the problem!
Peterson is winning at Washington in year 3. In his first two seasons at UW, he went 6-6 and 7-6. Kelly went 8-5, 8-5, and then played for the BCS championship in year three. Again, I like Peterson. And he did win major bowls with BSU, something that distinguishes him from Kelly. But I don't think he's a sure thing or anything. I think he'd be a guy worth betting on. As I thought about BK..
I totally agree with you. I think it is the restrictions put upon the Head Coaches. Maybe someone needs to get in Urban's ear and ask him and get it figured out.

Our own conference of like-minded universities unwilling to follow the semi-pro business model is far more likely, IMO.
It seems far-fetched, but if the power five agrees to any form of paying the players, I think we all will be surprised at how quickly it happens.
I don't know...Princeton is pretty tough.

1) IMO the option is a gimmick offense that works for 2-3 teams every year. Teams eventually figure it out defensively and hammer you.
2) No NFL teams run it
3) ND has enjoyed an uptick of sending players to the NFL--especially on offense. Doubt this would continue if we ran option.
4) As a result of #3, recruiting suffers because you have a limited audience of HSs that run the option.
5) We ND fans are fickle. It would only be a matter of time before we all began to loathe the option and clamor for an air-it-out coach
6) Why take a step "backwards" to a gimmick offense instead of, arguably, getting a coach (or coaches) who can implement
successful running and passing games and bring back a "football nasty" attitude?

"Gimmick offense that works two to three times every year." Paul Johnson's record at GT 65-47, Ken N's at Navy 72-38. I think that's more that 2-3 times every year.
I don't think the option is a 'gimmick offense'. It was a mainstay offense as late as the '80's and the powerhouse Nebraska teams of the 90's ran it.
Option or not, he's not the best candidate out there.
At Georgia Tech: 65-47 (0.580)
Overall (head coach): 172-86 (0.667)

His team sucks this year and the ACC has caught on to his gimmick
my message reads "TEAMS every year." If it is not a gimmick offense why don't lots more teams use it? I agree that in its day it was used as a formidable weapon but now it has gone the way of the fullback. As I stated, why step back in time to use it?
That Georgia Tech record isn't very good and Navy does not play the level of competition that we do. There is a reason that there are only a handful of coaches who run the option and why it went out of fashion. It is nearly impossible to come from behind and you just can't expect to lead wire to wire in every game against modern high-scoring offenses.
Fair enough. Kinda felt like I was grasping at straws and I appreciate the feedback. Been an ND fan for most of my 47 years and I'm sick of where the program has gone so just trying to get it figured out just like the rest of us.
I am just hopeful that whomever the ND Coach eventually is that he is hard nosed, has a balanced run-pass offense and a very aggressive hard-hitting defense. Like the Coach Holtz, Joe Moore, Barry Alvarez days.
