I get what he wants to say...that he can handle adversity...but his agent's media team is really asleep at the wheel...
Link: Notre Dame Football: DeShone Kizer Sees Advantages In Losing
He said it is an advantage, he's seen the good and the bad, he knows how they feel. Some of these other players have not dealt with losing like that, so you can't know how well they will bounce back. He learned some things about leadership, that all situations are not the same, he wasn't blaming personnel or saying he needs the right personnel.
The lesson he needs to learn here is that people will pick apart his comments to find whatever they want to find. Keep is simple: "No one was happy with a 4-8 record, but we learn through adversity, and I will continue to work hard on becoming a better player, teammate, and leader."
I am amazed at how many people less than a year ago supported this kid, and have turned on him, blaming him for the season. There is one root cause of a shitty football team, and that is the head coach. Kelly's program produced an overweight Kizer who did not perform up to his potential. The lack of leadership from the head coach, led to a lack of commitment and accountability from the captains, who continued that poor leadership of their teammates.
but he he just a kid as far as QB development. He played very relaxed in 2015 when he had nothing to lose and was bailed out by many fortunate breaks. There were dropped interceptions against Virginia and Georgia Tech and lost fumbles recovered by his offensive linemen against Georgia Tech and Massachusetts. He looked awesome against Pittsburgh, made a couple of big plays against Temple in a game in which he made a ton of poor choices. So he shined under pressure in that game but lacked consistency. He played very well against Stanford but had the fumble just before the half after a great run. He also played well in the second half for sure against Clemson. Consistency is the difference in QBs or an ability to shine under pressure. I have hopes that he develops because he is an ND guy and appears to have good character and shows flashes of talent, but he was not consistent and did not shine under pressure last year.
Kizer is going to shine and have a career following in the footsteps of Brady Quinn......Jimmy Clausen......the long legacy of great ND QBs
The one thing that I will say that makes me worry, is that if he had the drive for success that he will need to be successful, I don't think he would have been overweight.
Every athlete says you learn more by losing than by winning. I won 17 professional golf tournaments and I always learned more when I lost. When you start out a career winning, sometimes it gives you false impressions.
While he may not have said it in a great manner, it's clear to me that's what he was saying.

The rumor was they were considering him at #30. That would be (would have been?) ideal for him and likely his best shot at getting picked in the first round.
I don't.
The Steelers have had months to investigate Kizer's personal and competitive qualities, and I'm sure they have interviewed him extensively themselves, if they are seriously thinking about taking him.
I admit I have been hoping the Steelers would look at him. They have won all six of their SBs with QBs who had "diva qualities," so I'm thinking Kizer could well be within their comfort zone. It could be a good place for DeShone, I would think, although I would agree with anyone who said another year in college would have been better for his development.

lazy again. Only footballer who unintentionally put on the freshmen 15 or 25 or whatever it was.
Not that Wimbush would have beaten him out if he chose to stay, but they couldn't have just given Kizer the job. He'd have had to compete again, and Wimbush looks good enough to where it wouldn't have been settled in the spring.
I think if Wimbush isn't around, Kizer stays. But, it was the natural progression for Wimbush to take over in his third year and Kizer to move on. And I think Kizer knew that before he took a snap last season.
And I've said many times before, at some point the 4-8 record is going to be a huge hang up. There is no good answer. He made an effort here, but it just sounds like crappy spin.

Because maybe they already knew the answer?
Not sure how anyone would know it had nothing to do with it unless it was asked, but whatever.
I'm guessing none of them find it relevant or assume he wouldn't answer honestly.
It's easy to forget that the OL underachieved and he lost Will Fuller, Chris Brown and Amir Carlisle, as well as his top TE target in Alize Jones/Mack (also Smythe to injury).... replaced them with WR's and TE's that combined to have little more than 0 career catches and a non existent TE game. To me, 4-8 is more about the defense, coaching and inexperience around Kizer than Kizer himself. But - he certainly should have played better.
...looked ready to ascend this year...Kizer stays.
That's why having Kelly comment that he would have been better off staying was pretty ironic when, in my mind, Kelly is the largest component in the reasons for his leaving.
I know Kizer is trying to spin the 4-8, but his agent should have had a canned response that would guard against reverse spin.
Although the way Kelly handled the quarterback competition with Zaire probably played a big part in that in the preseason.
But, I think with Wimbush looming, he was leaving whether they were 4-8, 8-4, or 11-1. Matter of fact, something like 4-8 is the only way he considers staying, just because it's hard to sell yourself with that record, as Kizer is finding out now.
I could be wrong though, that's just my read of it.

There is not a remarkable ready-to-start QB out there in this draft (barring some Dak Prescott level surprise). He's not ready to start in the NFL, but only a stupid team would draft him to do so. His prototypical size and arm will be a godsend to a team that is willing to develop him behind an older QB. If I'm Kizer I'd rather take less money this year and get drafted by a good team at the bottom of the first or top of the second like Arizona, than possibly lose the QB competition to Wimbush at some point in the year or, alternatively, do really well and make more upfront money and go to a team like the 49ers or the Browns.
It's better to be Aaron Rodgers than it is to be David Carr.

What Kelly really should have done for his quarterback, instead of what he did (which I don't have a problem with in a vacuum), was put the blame on himself and the shitty operation they ran last year, so Kizer doesn't have to. Because that is the answer.
It was a fucked up Qb competition in the spring that spilled into the first fucking game, when the answer was obvious the entire time.
Lifting weights and working out was on a come when you can basis.
The defense was a mess.
Practices were soft. It was a dysfunctional team.
He was done a disservice and Kelly needed to fall on that sword.
Not all of us agree that Kizer was the clear choice. If Zaire was given the reigns at the start of the season we would have been no worse than 10-2. Every time Zaire went in the game he had shitty field position. Check where his drives started against Stanford and Texas and the bumblehead plays by his teammates. A key 4th and short situation that we were going for against Texas was turned into 4th and long because a lineman jumped and we punted. Stanford was a joke with field position at the 6 and 13 and the snap over his head from the 3. He looked good against Army and USC and if Kizer does not overthrow a wide open receiver against Navy we go up two scores.
