Both left early after terrible ND seasons.... Both were, at one point or another, projected to be first round picks.... Both slid to second round to terrible teams... Both teams will likely have taken a QB with the first overall pick the following year.... neither will probably ever get the chance to develop into a starting QB on a solid team.
Crazy coincidence and too bad.
There is no way in hell Kizer was/is going to succeed in Cleveland. He was thrown into a dumpster fire with no experience. What did anybody expect?
Give him a year or two develop and put him on a team like Jacksonville. You'll see a different QB entirely.

I've know very intelligent people who have made bad decisions, which is what one can say about Kizer- he's made poor decisions on the field that have led to a lot of turnovers.
I am not counting him out.
What has been the knock on Kizer...arm strength? accuracy? He's had crappy receivers on a crappy team with a crappy running game.....why can't he develop with experience into a solid QB?
You're picked. Or lack thereof.

'cause they are The Browns.

passer. Don't forget he had Cam Newton coming in. He really was playing well the game he started in Chicago until he got cheap shotted and concussed on the play. Kizer is condemned with a bad team but if he lands on his feet will have a chance. Clausen played for a bad team, went to a bad team and ended with a bad team.

Rookie seasons on a bad team are irrelevant.

Garopolo wasn't a superior player when he came out and if he went to the Browns, his career would probably be like Clausens. He went to New England and sat and learned for a few years and now the arrow is pointing up for him. Where a QB goes has a huge impact if they are not a top 10 pick because many of the NFL teams, especially the bottom feeders, don't develop QB's. If they aren't the obvious solution after a year, then throw another pick at the position, often a higher rated guy like Newton with Clausen or Rosen for Kizer and then they are leftovers. At that point, they might be able to resurrect their careers, but a lot of that is luck in going to the right place. Also, after a year of failure and replacement their head is often messed up and the head is the key element for a successful QB.

from Big Ben for a couple of years and then had a great structure around him?
If they want him to sit behind Ben for a year they can trade for him while the Browns move on to their next QB

At least Clausen played some his freshman yr, but Kizer leaving after 2 years only was just plain dumb..QB in the NFL is very difficult, it requires all the experience one can get..If an agent, I would advise any QB hopeful to play at least 3 yrs in college..Especially coming off a 4-8 season, in which he had the opportunity in 6 of those games, and failed to tie or win in 4th quarter, thus in my view. proving he wasn't ready..You have to bring teams from behind in NFL to be successful, and be very adept at the 2 minute drill..

but yes, I don't see him as a good NFL QB .

Many a reason for that I guess, but I don't think the colleges are developing QBs as in the past what with different spread offenses, and kids themselves coming out too soon..Seems like the pro game, and college game keep growing further apart
It was very hard to imagine that ND was going to do as well as they did this year... and another year like we had in 2016 might have sunk his draft status. As it is, he's wealthier than most members of this board and has a year of experience in the NFL, which has to be better than he would have gotten if he'd stayed in college. Meanwhile, I'm not sold that Darnold has the golden touch, and he may end up doing worse than Kizer with that surrounding cast on the Browns. I feel its way too early to pass judgment on Kizer. Actually, I don't feel comfortable passing judgment on anyone.

Is Clausen still in the league
After that last concussion he took when he was with the Bears, it looked like it was all over.
Quite frankly, I don't believe there wasn't much left in the tank after getting beat up (read sacked---didn't he set the record for getting sacked?) while at ND. It didn't exactly blow my dress up the way he handled his intro at the CFB Hall of Fame, but I love cockiness--especially in a QB--but only if he backs it up.
Same with Brady Quinn?
shock factor of Tebow when Quinn actually beat him out really hurt him. He won some games as an underdog in the pros.
He had everything you wanted, size, strong arm, some athleticism, good leader, worked at his craft, but he just wasn't accurate enough.
