Jay Hayes is transferring out. Down to 88 Scholarships
JHayes had the endurance to play the most snaps at SDE last year. He was a big strong body.
I thought he could have played SDE and 3T. Maybe some 1T if our underclassmen don't step forward there to help Bonner.
SDE was our most shallow DL position although there were 3 good candidates. Now we have 2. Justin could get that big. I have read Jamir might get moved there.
We needed JHayes for the rotation and depth even though Kareem and Ade may have move upside.

with the Bama's and O$U's of the world. Those teams cut players that don't meet expectations on the field, ND loses players that are actually going to contribute.
It is nice to know ND won't (maybe) go into the season with less than 85 scholarship players. So there is that.
Let's get real, he was a depth guy, not a starter. It is always nice to have guys with experience but chances are after the freshman arrive he would be maybe 4th on the depth chart.
Word is he wanted significant playing time to enhance his pro chances and he wasn't going to get enough of that at ND. Good for him....I hope he does well wherever he ends up.
You just can't have enough quality depth on the lines, especially with our grind.
Given that ND isn't going to "cut" anyone, the only place to get scholies is to not give out a 5th year to a guy like Jay Hayes who doesn't particularly stand out vis-a-vis other guys on the DL .
Where would you suggest the 4 scholies and not result in depth issues if you exclude the DL where we are nearly 4 deep?
We could perhaps lose a WR, a LB, maybe a S where there might be enough bodies to not impact depth and fatigue? What other position would we not be as exposed or really less exposed than DL?
Just hate to lose a run-stopping proven contributor.

He wasn't Stephon Tuitt, but he had an excellent year last year and was going to be counted on for a lot of snaps this year.
4th string? Absurd.
To say he would have been an important or key player in the DL line would be a stretch.
And I didn't say 4th string, I said 4th in the depth chart which is 2nd string. By any measure, he was behind Daelin Hayes and Khalid Kareem, and probably Julian Okwara for that matter, at DE which is where he wanted to play. At DT, where is probably too light to play in the pros, he was in the mix with Bonner, Tillery and Hinish at a minimum and not remarkably better than any of them.
I am sure if he was that important, they would have found a way to keep him around. And to the greater point, DL is probably the deepest group on the team which is where we can most afford to lose a guy.
I wish him well and thank him for being a part of the program. Seems to be a great young man. However, he is not the type of Player at DE that Notre Dame needs to compete with the bamas-osu’s of the world. Yes he did get better at stopping the run (holding the edge) but he was severely flawed in not being able to offer one ounce of pass rush ability. He should have been beefed up another 10 lbs and stayed at DT, but our talent at the time wouldn’t allow it. Now, with more talented players in the program and especially at DE he was bypassed at that spot. Both Khalid and Ade are more talented and offer abilities that he does not have. They will help take our dline to a higher level. Heck, Khalid already proved he was a much more disruptive football player last year and needs to be the starter. Ade is right on his heels and they both are the types of athletes that we have to put on the field to play against a bama.
As for transfers at championship level programs, Notre Dame doesn’t even hold a candle to the revolving door at some of these places. And yes many of them were gonna be counted on in their respective programs. Clemson had a few that stunned the coach ( other than dline because they are stacked at that position and one of the main reasons they are a great program right now)....bama had a boat load and OSU too. Remember Bo Scarbrough? Heck of a rb that transferred from bama and will be apx a mid round or so draft pick. How about that defensive tackle that ND was after from Clemson last year?
Anyway, this sort of thing needs/has to happen for ND to be at its best. The best players need to start regardless of time in program and if a senior player can’t deal with a reduction in playing time to a better football player, well, it’s time for you to move on. Notre Dame absolutely must continue to recruit the very best players each year that fit and coach em up to take someone’s job. That’s a championship mentality. There is not a coach in the game that would let nfl level talent sit on the bench to watch a journeyman play the majority of the game. The new DE’s are ready.

Younger player beats out older player (in this case a player that was actually offered by Alabama), older player leaves program, and the roster is trimmed down to 85.
(QB's don't count because the backups get zero reps in game), that was expected to get significant snaps, left either of those programs?
Not being argumentative, I honestly do not know the answer, if there are any.

have gotten snaps and who was just Saban cutting dead weight. Did try it and Bama did not come up anyways. Got Penn State & Maryland.

He was greatly improved last season
According to Brian Kelly, Kareem had passed him.

Just thank the kid for his contributions and wish him well. How hard could that be?
Basiically the question was if Khalid Kareem was ready to be a starter now that Hayes left. I believe Kelly answered honestly. He also didn't say that Hayes wouldn't play or be part of the rotation...just that Kareem had put in the work to be the starter, which is very believable if you look at how both players ended last season.
In any event, I wish Jay Hayes the best!
He is a small man figuratively and literally.

Are you sure about that? I'm not saying that isn't true but this is the first I've heard of that.
"Best" case scenario: He got passed over by other players and dropped on the depth chart during spring practice & thought he could get more playing time at another school as a graduate transfer.
Worst/more realistic scenario: He thought the D would stink in 2018 so he wanted to play for a school that had a legit chance at a NC or as the OP stated, he saw the writing on the wall in regards to grades/ his status on the team & split.
Either way this sucks. Hayes got better every year he played and even if he wasn't going to be a starter, he was still going to be a very valuable back up on a defense that had/has a chance to be very good in 2018.

or else he won’t be transferring.
Didn't see this one coming
Wish him well! A loss to our D line
The man gets his ND degree, put in a lot of blood and sweat, and did a nice job for our team, and I'm proud to call him a fellow ND alum.
