Northwestern playing Michigan would be great for Notre Dame since we beat both, it would also be great for Clemson and Pitt to play in the acc title game

Georgia nips Alabama in the SEC title game. Both are in the playoff. Clemson rolls and is also in, and under your scenario, so is Michigan.

Head-to-head and common opponents are supposed to be two of their main criteria. I get that UM has improved on offense, but then we are much better since the switch to Book and the return of Williams.
It would surprise me, but I guess it is possible.
It would be hard to justify given the clear points of better record, head-to-head, and common opponent all coming out in ND's favor. But people do crazy things, so . . . .

Like I said, I could see it happen. But I doubt still doubt it.
That is the only way it happens: UM convincingly beats OSU then stomps NW in the Pig 10 championship. Even then, though, I suspect undefeated ND is one spot ahead of UM. It is very hard to get around better record + head-to-head. And even a beat down of NW on a neutral field wouldn't completely erase a three-point get-by at home against the same team. Realistically, I still think there is a good chance OSU beats UM. A few short weeks ago, I was pretty confident OSU would win. Things have changed. But the game is in Columbus and Urbie will have a chance to circle the wagons. If UM wins, I really don't see them beating NW by 40. But who knows? A convincing win by ND against a Syracuse team that otherwise wins out probably keeps ND on the right side of the fence even "if." The mostly likely scenario I see for UM "jumping" ND would be if both are in and it is just a ranking thing. But UM getting in and squeezing ND out . . . you just can't justify that when ND is unbeaten and beat UM head-to-head. Some people keep saying FSU '93, but that only happened because ND lost late in the season. If ND won out then, ND would have played Nebraska in the Orange Bowl for the NC. If ND wins out now, they pretty much have to be in the playoff. At least over UM. If an undefeated ND gets squeezed out, I think it would more likely be by way of Georgia knocking off Bama so both get in. LSU did ND a favor by beating Georgia pretty good, so that weighs against that.
