We ND fans know that all too well.
It's a roll of the dice.
I think Kelly will be at ND for a few more years, so this is really a wasted effort, which makes it a perfect discussion on a fan message board.
However, if I'm Jack Swarbrick, and BK comes to me tomorrow to tell me that 2019 is his last year, I would start my search with:
Urban Meyer - I highly doubt ND would be able to overlook his ethical lapses, but IF ND decided that, damn it all, it's time to win a national title again, then this is the obvious choice. Maybe ND could put guardrails in place to ensure he stays on the straight and narrow. Of course his health is also an issue. I think he would give it strong consideration.
After Urbie, I focus on these four:
Matt Campbell
Luke Fickell
Pat Fitzgerald
Brent Venables
Sarcasm for sure

would be better or worse than Kelly at Notre Dame.
Nine years is enough to know what you have in a HC...if you are happy with what you have you keep him, if you're not then you move on and make the highest quality hire you can and give him a fair shake. If he doesn't work, wash, rinse, repeat...while I don't personally think highly of him, someone like Pat Fitzgerald could come here and be the next Ara, while Chris Peterson, who I think highly of could come here and fall flat on his face. You just never know, but you can't stick with someone who isn't right for 10-15 years because you are afraid of what might happen with the next guy.
they clearly know the obstacles to winning a National Championship like not getting the top notch 5* guys in abundance, can't recruit academically challenged players to build depth, have to play a ridiculous schedule to build the ND brand and not football success, and ND won't pay top dollar for the head coach or assistants.
Best to take a chance with a young up and coming coach and hope you strike gold. Who knew when they where first hired that Meyer, Dabo, Saban or Stoops would be successful? Find a young energetic guy that doesn't know better and wants to make his mark. Just might hit a winner. A so-called proven name isn't coming and even if so you might be hiring a retread.
But WTF do I know.

I will be very interested in how people respond to this question. How many people will mention Stoops and/or Meyer? Neither whom are going to happen.
