How does ND get into the top 4. First the selection committee like most of the country, and unlike the homers on this board, knows that ND is a walkover. So if the PAC 12 is out, then Oklahoma has to lose or SCUM has to beat tOSU, highly unlikely.
So assuming, Clemson and Bama is in. There is at least one SEC team also in UGA, LSU and FL likely.
It’s going to be tough this year but at least there’s a shot at winning a bowl game.
It’s early but that’s how I see it.
More than likely the Pac-12 will be left out again, meaning something has to happen to both the Big 12 and Big 10. I don't see it this year, unfortunately, but stranger things have happened and plenty of football is left.
In 2015 a 1 loss ND was No. 4 until they crapped the bed against BC and Stanford. Play better in those games and I think they are in.
In 2017 a 1 loss ND was No. 3 going into Miami...win out and that team is in for sure.
In 2018, it would have come down to tOSU or ND. Depending on when and how ND lost I think they could have still been in with one loss since tOSU had such a bad loss against Purdue.
I think it's safe to say a 1-loss ND team will finish anywhere between 3 and 5. Obviously the difference between 4 and 5 is huge.
You picked them to win 8 before the season, and now you have them winning out. Trending up!

Chances are it will be: BAMA, Clemson, OSU, Oklahoma.... our only hope is for Georgia to win the SEC and for OSU or Oklahoma to have 2 loses.
yes they definitely can have 2 and most likely will
The schedule will mandate that all but one SEC team will have a loss at the end of the season. Best case scenario for the SEC, 2 teams will have one loss after the SEC Championship. Two one loss SEC teams will not pass the Big 12 & Big 10 champs this year. The polls today, before the SEC season starts has no bearing on the final results!
On the SOS of the top SEC teams
By the end of the season Alabama, LSU and Georgia will likely have each played 3 Top ten teams....
Who will we have played? Georgia...that is it
It might be likely, but not absolute. I think it depends on who the champion is.
Well, we will ultimately see what the committee says, but I don't think you would see OSU or Oklahoma drop below ND after one loss.
suffer losses to lesser teams than Georgia we may have a decent chance.

They killed us last year and we will not bump them with one loss
You are smoking some funny stuff arent you

What an edgy, original take - ND needs a lot of help to make the playoffs. Thanks for the insight.
For some reason I will still go to South Bend this weekend and find a way to enjoy watching our walkovers dismantle the hated Trojans.
to overreaction so I expect a 1 loss GA/Bama in no matter what. That leaves Oklahoma, Clemson or OSU out.
A Clemson loss to Virginia in the ACC title game would militate favorably for ND getting in over a 1 loss ACC champ
of beating them.
In other words, they have to be dominant from now on. People need to be making the eye test argument for them, instead of against them. I don't see that happening because just by the law of averages it probably won't and I don't think they are explosive enough on offense for it, but that's what they need.
If they finish at 11-1 and 5th or 6th then so be it.

Creative way to slam ND
Last yr people want a 2 loss Ga in the play offs instead of us! Remember the friggin eye test bs?

way they're in. If not, we can enjoy wins over Southern Cal and SCUM.

As fans we have hopes that the team will be good enough to meet the challenges of a tough schedule, and win the games that will get them to the final four. Unfortunately we could not beat Georgia, so logically the odds are not good. Enjoy the season...hope for good wins and few injuries. If it doesn't happen, hope for good recruiting and better things next year. Pretty simple.
What happened with everyone on this board? Are you just happy to compete and win 10 games a year? So you’re happy being Michigan and PennState? I remember as a child when ND was a considered champion every year. Have you given up that dream? I haven’t.
the yearly champions you paint us to be?
My honest assessment of your persistent perspective on things is that it’s too nostalgic for the past, not realistic enough for the present and usually far too bleak about the future.
ranked number 1, almost always picked us to play. Even when Nebraska trounced Ara's team in 1972 and they weren't number 1 they had the choice who they played when Alabama ducked them and we had to go against the most talented team that year. So we had the benefit of opportunity a ton. We were number 3 when we beat Alabama the next year and were extremely lucky because Michigan and Ohio State tied and neither got to go. In 1977 we were number 5 and got to play number 1. Even in 1980 we got to play number 1 after Devine coached the shittiest game ever against Southern Cal who had a mediocre year that year and lost. That was another year we blew the championship because we lost to Southern Cal when we were way better and lost to Georgia later when we outgained them like 450 yards to about 150. Their QB completed one or two passes in that bowl game.
Those are facts so of course it is harder to win a national title now than in our glorious past. Hell, we got to play number one Texas the first year we went back and we had, a loss and a tie that year or maybe two losses and a tie.

Choose to follow another team?
Kick your wife and yell at your dog?
Rant on the boards about how everyone has settled for a perennial 10+ win team that can't win the natty?
I don't think anyone who utilizes this forum has settled for anything. But I am not going to be miserable when the Irish beat USC or UM. I'll hope that they will get some breaks and find a way in to the playoff, but it doesn't seem likely.
I refuse to accept mediocrity which is another term for failure. At one time every season there was hope for a National Championship. Tell me honestly when was the last time you believed that? And you don’t believe that for the future. Do you?
If you honestly think ND is playing by the same rules as other schools, then you're crazy.
Newflash, ND isn't going to be a year in and year out title contender unless rules get in-forced or changed.
Can ND win a title, sure? Throw Trevor Lawrence on ND and they have a great shot to win last year and are in the hunt this year again.
Here is the good news, the coach you hate (weird to hate a guy you don't know) has ND in a position where a player or two could swing it in ND's favor. Took him too long, but it's there, and the 3 coaches before him couldn't do it and Holtz was losing grasp of it too on his way out.
But we could fire him, and go grab the next "hot" coach that's likely to fail. And then start the revolving door again.
We are probably the sixth best team in the country but we would have a less than 50/50 chance but a maybe a 1 in 5 chance. I would take that.
I think we are 6-8 range....beating USC and Michigan will solidify that.....and knowing that teams in front of us will lose in coming weeks....
Will take some miracles.....too bad that USC and Michigan arent having up years....Stanford as well....
SEC looks very strong again.......Ohio State and OK look very good.....throw in Clemson......wow.
I think Alabama, LSU and Georgia are all better than us....OSU and OK, and Clemson.....6-8 range like I said
That all goes out the door with a loss in next two games
And I never said I hated Kelly those are your words. In fact knowing Kelly more than you he would agree with me that he hasn’t got the job done yet. So there’s that. You know shit about me or Kelly.
Actually loved the few times I went to Vegas with him during the first round of March Madness. Used to be an annual trip for him, but then it spring ball started getting in the way every so often. He like Aria and Cosmo now though.
Those were the days
Of course I complain. Call me a moron, but I hope for a Championship every year. I still can't wait for the season to begin every year, and I still can't wait until 3:30 every Saturday. In fact, there probably isn't a whole lot of things that could ever change that.
