our last loss to an unranked was VT in 2016, since then everyone has a loss (except Bama)

The next step is winning big games on the road and consistently being in the playoff conversation late in the year.

a unranked team. Roll tide y’all! And ND gets a participation trophy for following behind, Go Irish!
thing up to a point. But when it leads to self delusion, it can actually become a negative.
I love ND. I love that you love them. But this is not helpful, it’s embarrassing.
ND won in the last 30 years?

That’s because the NCAA took away 21 games but,

Is an interesting measure of “success”.
Beating and at least competing with the top 10’s and top 5’s is a better barometer of success.
Kelly falls very short in those categories.
3-8 vs top 10 in season
2-12 vs final top 10
0-5 vs Top 5 in season.
1-9 vs Top 5 final ranking.
10 years produces adequate data sets.
For instance, If Kelly wins out and gets to a major bowl and beats a quality opponent, that would be a success.
With his track record, I would say that is very unlikely. It shouldn’t be.

When you do, you sorta never actually win anything that matters...like a championship, or a playoff game...or a major bowl game.
Winning against the teams we are suppose to is improvement in the program. We haven't won a lot of those games in the past 30 years. Improvement in the program could potentially lead to more improvement.
Success breeds success. Better culture, better recruits, better staff, etc. That could possibly lead to championships, CFP wins, bowls wins, etc.
So yes, winning games is a success. Losing games isn't a success. Regardless of the opponent. Now, can we breed more success from it?
that were mentioned here... has actually happened. It's nice that you're assuming that the baby steps (dwarf baby steps?) will get us there at some undefined point in the future, but that's just an assumption on your part against 10 years of hard data.
Kelly's major accomplishments are the undefeated seasons. I give him credit there as that is no small feat. However, capping each one with an utterly embarrassing blowout tarnishes the accomplishment and doesn't provide any comfort that it's a true step towards sustained real success.
(Also, as an aside, Kelly will lose to an unranked team soon enough. Hell, Michigan was all of #19...and beat us like a red-headed stepchild...)

No one is saying this is a justifiable result.
But saying that it isn't success to start winning games it has lost in the past is silly.

on top of all of the other disgraceful performances going back to Tulsa with only one big win to compensate. He made them look like a playoff team.
Time to move on. I would not give him a big extension at the end of the year. Prove it next year dude or move on.
