Well, not arbitrary. Contrived.
Can't do last 5 years. Can't do last 10 years.
Even in three years, can't do top 5.
Georgia, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Clemson. Our schedule has been pretty much good to trash under BK, so his wins total is elusive

Vs. Top 10 At Time of Game: Kelly 3-8 Ara 10-9-3 (Holtz 20-15-1)
Vs. Top 10 in Final Ranking: Kelly 2-13 Ara 7-9-3 (Holtz 15-17-1)
Is this offered as some sort of defense of Kelly? Because Ara's numbers aren't quite what one might expect?
Kelly's numbers are just awful.
It's not easy to play the top 10. It's not supposed to be...but Kelly has not been up to the task a very large part of the time..
At some point, when I have more time, I'll look at loss differential of all three against top 10 opponents.
I do know that in Kelly's 6 losses over the last 3 years...he has lost 197-81 for an average margin of defeat of 19.33 points per game...
higher recruiting rankings. In Lou's day we recruited better than anybody and in Ara's, though I don't know for sure, I am quite sure that Ara's were highly ranked. I loved Ara but Lou was the best against tough teams, but he should have been with the back to back to back top recruiting rankings.

Vs. Top 10 At Time of Game:
Kelly 3-8 Avg. margin of defeat in the 8 losses: 16.875
Ara 10-9-3 Avg. margin of defeat in the 9 losses: 15.889
Holtz 20-15-1 Avg. margin of defeat in the 15 losses: 10.867
Vs. Top 10 in Final Ranking:
Kelly 2-13 Avg. margin of defeat in the 13 losses: 13.000 (13 losses Includes Georgia for 2019)
Ara 7-9-3 Avg. margin of defeat in the 9 losses: 15.778
Holtz 15-17-1 Avg. margin of defeat in the 17 losses: 11.470
For what it's worth, Kelly has done better than Ara in the margin of defeat in losses to opponents who were ultimately ranked in the Top 10 at the season's end.

The game is increasingly regional, ie. Southern. Ohio State is the sole geographically "Northern" institution (although it does have a significant % of rednecks) and USC has seriously jumped the recruiting shark the last couple years. The only thing that will change this is allowing corporate endorsement contracts on signing day.

2017 some had in the top 10.

Especially when 2017 was one of the hardest schedules?

Four other Big Ten teams ahead of Michigan on that list.

We hate Michigan right? That makes us feel better
