"Notre Dame QB Ian Book is going to be an interesting prospect next April. He’s probably a Day 3 pick, but could be the kind of player who winds up hanging around the NFL as a backup for a decade. It seems like he’s just barely good enough at a lot of different things, to where teams will keep him around."
I would be surprised to see him have a long NFL career, but I suppose stranger things have happened....
He's never been considered for a starting role, but has picked up a few spot starts for injured QBs.
If he can be Mr. Backup for over a decade, so could Book. Their college stats are very similar (completion percentage, yards per attempt, TD:INT ratio), as are their arms and heights.
Ian is much more athletic and better on the move, though.

1. He hasn’t made significant strides from 2018 to 2020.
2. And no one has come in and taken the job from him given the lack of improvement.
At the end of the day, most of which really isn’t on Book.
win the position, but looking back at Kelly's history, backups thrown into the starting role historically have been an upgrade. Why did Wimbush get so much PT before sitting? Did Kizer not look good in practice? Did Dayne only shit the bed in games? There is something odd in Kelly's QB history at ND.

While Book can get away with his arm strength and relatively poor downfield passing ability in college, that isn't going to fly in the NFL.
I don't think he gets drafted and I don't think he ever sees a real down in the NFL.
That doesn't mean that I am down on him as ND's qb. But the fact is the next high quality team he "beats" will be the 1st one.
MMQB also said this about Book on Saturday:
".....The issue, however, is that he was almost utterly unwilling to throw the ball downfield. In two games he’s attempted just three non red zone throws beyond 20 yards, and one was on a simple comeback route. The lack of separation is an issue, but at some point Book needs to be the leader and give those players chances to make plays in some of those situations, and this was a game where that should have happened.
Book managed the game well, but he needs to make more plays if he’s going to get better grades. Missing a wide open Javon McKinley on an in cut and throwing late and off target to Joe Wilkins Jr. in the end zone to force a field goal are plays he can’t and shouldn’t miss. He missed the first throw but was late with his read on the second."
Some like Fluite, though short have an uncanny ability to see the whole field without seeing over the height of the 6'6" + linemen. Book doesn't have that.
They say you can't teach height and in this case, that cliché' would be accurate. Jurkovec is able to get past his freshman mistakes because of his
height. His mechanics were not to the liking of Kelly (Kelly who likes to fit round objects into square holes) therefore not the morning glory Book
is so he was never going to get his opportunity at ND - nice to see him at BC where they have a need for a decent and possibly good QB.
Book is a serviceable QB in college but likely will never make it to the NFL and if by chance he gets a call after not being drafted,
he will never leave a mark as a QB.

First of all, Flutie threw a total 91 passes in the NFL over those 12 years. The fact that he stuck around is a testament to what the NFL used to me and not what it is now.
A more modern comparison would be Brees or Wilson, perhaps Kyler Murray. But Book isn't anywhere near as talented as any of those three. Heck Book isn't anywhere near as talented as Chase Daniels for that matter.

He'll be back in 2021.

He doesn't have the talent for Sunday.

whether they participated in 2020 or not.
Meanwhile, Jurko, the guy who should be our QB, had a great start for Backup College, and is on the cusp of blossoming in a new system. Once again, ol' Purple Face has shown that he is the master QB fucker-upper.
20 and 3 as a starter. Get back to me when Jurko has done that.

If he can show that he has a good football IQ in the pros, he could stick around for a while, but as a backup. Since we're not a spread-option team, and that Brian Kelly's spread offense is more of a hybrid between a spread and a pro-style offense, that could make it even more likely.
If the Detmer brothers (Ty and Koy) survived about a decade each in the NFL as backups, it's in the realm of possibility that Book could as well.
