Nice work and well deserved. A 4th round pick was definitely a surprise but being drafted, not so much. Regardless of how it shakes out he played his way into a least a shot. Congrats!!
days.
He was predicted to be a late-round (5-7) draft choice or a FA signing. He went half a round earlier to a team without a 5th-round choice to a coach who thought he was "scrappy" after a run of 8 QBs in the first 3 rounds, which has never happened before. The other 3 QBs in the playoff went 1, 11 and 15 overall.
I'll decline the crow, thank you.

that they didn't like when they could easily wait a year, or pick up a proven journeyman?? My God, you people, and your excuses.

Congrats to Ian!

out patterns on the side line where he strung the needle with superb arm strength with accuracy. Lack of big play receivers were his problem other than Claypool on 50/50 balls but the tight end could not consistently catch the ball, even Claypool often missed the easy pass.

all that matter.
Now, go talk about defense and offensive line and 5* stars and all the bs excuses.

we were a 7 point underdog, played superbly against Texas in a game considered 50/50 and had thrown a bomb for a TD to Fuller again against Virginia, had us down to the 24 yard line to take a two score lead against Virginia the play before he was hurt. He was considered a very good college QB at that point and we were considered a national championship contender with him at QB. He was very unlucky with the injury and showed nothing but a classy attitude with the letter he wrote at his point of transfer thanking ND and saying he would always be a Domer. He could have gone to Harvard, obviously very intelligent and once again was bitten by lady luck for his stint at Florida where he was loved by his teammates. Frankly Kizer was lucky that a lot of passes he threw were not picked against Virginia, Georgia Tech and that a few of his fumbles were recovered by teammates. Kizer looked much sharper against Texas the next year and we were robbed when there was no penalty on the Hunter cheapshot hit.( perhaps the most egregious lack of a call for targeting at the time). The game he Zaire got in against Stanford when Kizer was playing horribly, we never had good field position on any of his three drives and in fact our center snapped the ball over his head on one of them. He made a great run to good us out of really bad field position after the poor snap which was unfortunately called back for a penalty. It was bad luck in all that game for him too.
I happened to like Golson too and thought you guys were too harsh on him because he had the ability to bring a team back, remember the great win against Stanford the year before, and his ability to drive the team at the end of first halfs. We were never out of a game with Golson. As for Kizer he had a superb, accurate arm but had 7 opportunities to lead us to victory in 2016 and did not bring us back once in those seven.
footwork and work on being a leader. Had all the tools, but skimped on mastering the craft.
Selfishly, imagine how unstoppable our O would have been in 2017.
Re Malik: His personality either connects with people or turns them off, not much ground in the middle.
Both lines balled out v LSU and against Texas he had time for a shave and a haircut while waiting for WRs to run free.
And after the injury, he was never the same player, either at ND or Florida. Looked overwhelmed constantly.

Remember he was the best athlete at QB, had the strongest arm, was the fastest, was going to be the star. Problem was he never knew how to play QB but everyone was infatuated with all his talent.

where good enough to be a starter in the NFL. And only because Kelly can’t recruit a top tier QB did he ever see the field. But I’m happy for him.
Those "I told you so" dudes that are crowing now had to have some major doubt after the Michigan game and the vision of Ian standing on the sideline alone, cold and shivering. The "Phil" chants were loud and clear and it was almost universal, except for a couple QB gurus who make the rounds under different names on Irish message boards. I'm glad it worked out for Ian but no one could have predicted it on that cold wet night in Ann Arbor.
no experience or proof and Book worked him that Spring game only to sit the bench. It really wasn't that hard to see... from almost day 1. It just took Kelly almost 18 months and these board guru's still don't get it with a 4th round draft pick.

that's something that is probably unlikely but if he does I wouldn't be shocked.
edge but he has already failed a bit in his NFL career, and Hill is a great football player but maybe not a QB. Who knows what will happen. We can only hope he gets a shot and comes through. He has a ton of talent around him.
then becomes a starter. Otherwise 2 or 3 years and out, or a journeyman career backup. If not successful it likely won't be for not trying.
He struggled mightily against top competition in college, so you can imagine what it will be like in the NFL.
His one-read, spin, and scramble act won't fly.

accurate passer I have seen in college on both short and long throws. We had no defense when he was with us, and he played hurt a lot with little protection and our center at the time Sullivan, could not snap the ball consistently on the shotgun though he finally mastered it in the pros.

Dont think he ever wow'd anyone but played consistent and did what he was told most of the time. Most coaches and GM's like that. The position needs game changers and sorry, Ian was never that. But he was a good leader, good teammate, and a great rep for the school.

It's consistent with what most ND fans thought, a good college QB, NFL backup.
You don’t invest a Rd 4 pick for a guy you think has a backup role as a ceiling. NO might be wrong, but they must think there is more potential there.

Grayson was a draft “riser” that year, and nobody was surprised he went in Rd 3. He’s probably a good comp for Book/Saints. They invested in a guy perceived to have starter potential, but appeared to have backup qualities as a “floor.” Grayson obviously didn’t pan out.
To be clear: I’m talking about how NO views him, not how I think Book will do. He very well might go the way of Grayson in his career. But I don’t think the Saints invest in him in Rd 4 if they view his ceiling as “potential backup” — that’s my point. I’ll personally be surprised if Book thrives in the NFL. Hope to be wrong.
on that assumption.

in reference to him not likely being a starter in the NFL.
the haters wrong. It's a simple fact and he has ND records to show for it and his name is on a draft pick that can never be erased. Just keep hating and looking dumb.

Clemson, Bama and OSU all had QBs drafted in the top 15 picks.
Doubtful any of their fans would be celebrating a QB picked at the end of the 4th round. You and others doing a victory lap on this is an embarrassing reminder of where the program is at in comparison to the top 3.
I'm really happy for Ian, he seems like a great kid who maximized his talent, but realistically, we have to get better at the QB position to win a NC.
All that said, here's hoping Coan gets drafted!
Keep bringing up the stuff that supports your armchair. I'll look at the facts that he's outperformed every metric that's been thrown at him and you can't change that.

I ran a search for all post by you including "Book". I got mostly slamming him:
- "Career backup at best and Kelly should get credit..." - https://forum.uhnd.com/forum/index.php?action=display&forumid=6&msgid=442111
- Not really a glowing review of him here - https://forum.uhnd.com/forum/index.php?action=display&forumid=6&msgid=437529
- Talking down and not seeing progress here - https://forum.uhnd.com/forum/index.php?action=display&forumid=6&msgid=434437
- "We are not a top 5 team with Book at QB but Wimbush has that kind of upside..." really laughable post - https://forum.uhnd.com/forum/index.php?action=display&forumid=6&msgid=350865
Then I ran one for you and "Draft" and pretty much came up with nothing. All of them actually from today. How odd??
Can you remind me outside of after the fact that he got drafted, when you might have "expected" it would be in the 4th round? You must be freaking Mel Kiper. Woa.

linebacker. Most of our success is with linemen which is a great thing to have but they only make you a very good team, not a championship team, we need some difference makers and we are starting to get more of them I believe with our potential at receiver and our defensive line and Mr. Hamilton who is a star. Watch for our development at linebacker too. Our defense will be very solid again and our offensive line will get better and better. It gives us a fighting chance. One difference maker on offense and we are close with our backs and receivers and maybe the young QB too.
