A lot can happen, but it appears that Coan is going to start things out, with Buchner relieving him.

the offense yet. But the difference is he can extend a play and do something if initial design is covered. Coan is one-dimensional (to put it gently) and has to get the ball out of his hand right away. Several games he has looked sharp on the first drive, though his first drive versus Cincy ended in that awful pick and he came out and flopped against VT. Up-tempo can work for him because it is the only way he can keep a defense off balance....
And a liberal use of Buchner throughout -- maybe ever third series or so. I'm going out on a limb and predicting that ND's OL will look much improved, and that the running game will be solid for once. The big question on the night is whether ND's corners can hold up enough. A high-scoring affair wouldn't surprise me.

.. and two minute offense is where Coan has been good all season (when line protects).
When line doesn't protect Coan is a sitting duck back there.
The fool must love spotting the opponent 10.
He's going to take an easily winnable game and make it hectic..
If either are injured, Pyne will step in.

I want to see Buchner every third series or so.

Terry Hanratty, and Joe Theismann were on same team, as were Hanratty, and Coley O'Brien.......and that Carson Wentz/Nick Foles duo played out pretty well in the NFL...

They alternated a lot under one of the greats, Tom Landry.
Staunach took over for the last ten and then a Super Bowl
Quick, cherry pick another singular example out of thousands…
or previously mentioned that.
Staubach took over and was the QB for the remainder of season. Now if Kelly picks one and sticks with him the rest of the season then your analogy is correct. Let’s see if he does?

He's a graduate transfer.
He played in 6 games in 2017, 5 games in 2018, 14 games in 2019, and now every game in 2021.
Based on that, he has no remaining eligibility (unless there's some sort of COVID rule in place).
Covid eligibility rules allow for athletes to take 6 years (instead of the usual 5) to use 4 years of eligibility.
If you play in more than 4 games in a year, you use up 1 year of eligibility.
So this appears to be Coan's last year.

With COVID, you now have 6 to play 4.
This also has him with only 3 games in 2017.

I think Coan is doing fine given the OL issues but Buchner is a more talented player and if he doesn't play next year in favor of Coan, it would be a major mistake.
...but once ND has a second regular season loss...Coan should be sitting. After that, it would only be about developing for the future.

Missing the forest for the trees situation. That's what I thought when Kelly said before last game that Coan has done nothing to 'lose' the starting job.
It's not about "Coan" , it's about how the overall offense is consistently better when someone else is in there... Kelly is clueless.
2 QB systems are great
And he is all knowing
" a team with two QBS has no QBs....IS AN OLD TIRED REFRAIN, CLICHE THAT HAS BEEN PROVEN WRONG TIME AND TIME AGAIN..
You dont have a leg to stand on, thats what you said, so as usual, you distort the facts and resort to personal attacks...
Posters are used to your act, nothing but a troll, and a poor one at that..
Nice try. The current ND 2QB system sucks…face it. Anybody outside this board knows that; it’s amazing how shitty our QB recruiting is.
How was I to know you aren’t a 16 year old Cubs fan? You mean you aren’t?
I listed 3 examples, and another poster had one..And with your limited knowledge, Im sure you never heard of the '72 17-0 Miami Dolphins...QBs Bob Griese, and Earl Morrall..You're outclassed here, I have no idea why you "post"
There are at least 6-7 on here who agree the 2 QB system is failing and should be abandoned. But you just keep going ahead and acting like I’m the lone dissenter.
Just like there are many who agree we play a weak schedule and have not impressed the pollsters with close wins against mediocre opponents. Not just one, multiple.
We have a good Top 15 team. Nothing to be ashamed of.
To me Coan is in 3rd place
Imagine what any top five team would do to Coan. It would be sad to watch. Georgia would destroy him.
Resulting in two pick sixes...and almost brought ND all the way back vs Cincy.....Deserves another shot..
I saw the dilemma Kelly/Rees are in ...Coan started out miserably, going something like 27 yds on 13 plays, Buchner enters and saves the day with 3 TDS...Buchner then implodes, throwing a pick-6 ,and going 1 for 6, to put ND behind..Enter Coan who saves the day with 2 scoring drives,,So what do you do? Both had their moments, and both stunk out the joint..
Im on record here as is TC and others, you start Buchner, with Coan available to save the day in the up tempo offense , if needed..Id love to see Buchner start, and not have the burden of a 10-0, 17-0 deficit, maybe the kid calms down, and makes few if any mistakes if ND jumps to an early lead..
Apparently though, the head man , with the only vote that counts, doesnt see it that way..
Griese played in 6 of the 14 games…doesn’t sound like a 2 QB system to me
Now if Kelly stops interchanging then right about now your point is valid.
But we all know he won’t and this shit show will continue
start and if anything Coan pinch hit although I like Pyne better than him too.
He was the right hire for the time, I don't regret his hiring... I regret keeping him after disaster seasons in '14 & '16 (coupled with his numerous missteps in prior seasons).
He's not terrible, but he's not really good either... the bar isn't Davie/ty/Weis, the bar is #1 all-time winning percentage and NCs. I don't hate Kelly, I appreciate what he's done but I also realize we've gotten as far as we will with him and it's time to move on.
Yeah, on QB thing I would start Buchner and list Pyne and Coan as co #2 but use Pyne as the real #2 and save Coan for if we need two minute offense late in the game.
